Manchaca is a quiet little town just about 17 miles south of downtown Austin. You won't find much here except the "Railroad BBQ" joint and the post office. There are a couple of churches, and a man who carves tree stumps into Indians and a multitude of other things. The big claim to fame is the train passes through Manchaca on the way to Austin. It is also home to one of the most famous local arbortists who owns "Its about Thyme" Nursery, they have a great selection of native trees, shrubs and flowering plants. It is a small town community and they host the "World Famous Weiner Dog Race" each spring. The residents call it Man-Chack, so if you pronounce it phonetically they will know your not from around here. The town was named after the Manchaca Springs. The springs were named after an early political and military leader by the name of Jose Antonio Manchaca.

According to the Austin American Statesman newspaper back in 1882-Manchaca has a blacksmith shop, a barber shop and The Manchaca Hotel that is run by Mr. G.E.Miller. "His house is new and well furnished. Mr. Miller and his good lady understand how to prepare a meal for a hungry traveler. Mr. Miller owns most of the land around here and on his place are the quarries from which the stone was taken to build the railroad bridge on the Colorado River and many other bridges on the international and Great Northern Railroad."

Manchaca is now home to several new home communities: Ashbrook, Bridges at Bear Creek, Bauerlie Ranch and The Gabardine Condos. If your looking for resale homes you may find an older 1960's or 1970's or 1980's home on a large one acre or half acre lot. This area is experiencing growth due to its close proximity to Austin Texas.
