Lost Creek Wilderness Area - Colorado

Designated as wilderness in 1980, the Lost Creek Wilderness Area includes almost 120,000 acres of forest, river, and incredible rock formations amid the Tarryall, Platte River and Kenosha mountain ranges in the heart of Colorado. Running through the middle of this magnificence, is the 35 mile long Tarryall Valley.

The area was settled by miners and ranchers, drawn by beauty and hope for success, their future was carved out of this immense landscape. The valley is dotted with evidence of their time here, abandoned buildings telling the stories of the rough and rugged few who called this home.

The Wilderness is a favorite of backpackers, mountain and rock climbers, fisherman, and photographers. Wildlife is abundant here and one might see black bear, mule deer, mountain lion, golden eagles, and elk.  It is one of the best spots for viewing bighorn sheep, although I wasn't lucky enough to see any on this trip.

As usual Debi - You have posted some really nice photos.  I love the second and third one especially!  I will say that there needs to be a Home Inspection performed on the property pictured in the third photo however:-)

Hi Debi, The mark of a true professional. When photos look paintings, there just can't be a better compliment. There are no words that fully express the magnificent creations and to be able to capture them in this art form is simply awesome!

I could definitely see why this would be a favorite of backpackers, mountain and rock climbers, fisherman, and photographers...it's absolutely gorgeous! And your pictures, as wonderful as they are, probably don't even scratch the surface of how beautiful the Lost Creek Wilderness area is.

Beautiful photographs! I was in Colorado myself in September 2009. We traveled to Idaho Springs where I have a shot or two of the abandoned gold mines. Colorado is beautiful but I am always glad to get back to level ground.

Very nice.  Don't have any hills and valleys like that out here in Virginia Beach.

Deb,

Your photography skills really captured the majesty of the wilderness area. I would consider it lucky not to see bears and mountain lions.

Hi Debi, Such pretty photographs, but I've never heard the name Lost Creek Wilderness area -- so when I looked it up, oh yeah, I've been there, I just thought it was part of the Pike National Forest HAHA!  so nice to learn something new.  Thanks for the great trip, today!

Hi Debi,

Beautiful tour of the Lost Creek Wilderness.  I especially loved that picture of the mountain that had the little rock formations at the very top-some of them looked like the heads of bald eagles.

Wow, Debi, these are so beautiful -- and you can feel the history of that old log cabin, in ruins now, but an important home at one point...

Hi Craig, You're right, this is one of those times when my photographs disappoint - I truly don't know how to capture the real majesty of this place! I don't know if anyone has.... You gotta be there!

Hi Teral - that makes me laugh!  I grew up on the west coast, but the mountains are in my soul- I can never wait to get back up high when I travel to the flatlands!

Hello Gene - No, I suppose you don't! LOL While the east coast mountains are beautiful as well, we refer to them as hills!

Hi Rich- Yes, I suppose running into a bear or mountain lion would give me pause....but I'd really angry with myself if I didn't get a shot! LOL

Hi Mary! Thanks for going on the trip with me :) When were you here? Did you love it?!

Thanks Gary! Glad you stopped by :)

Hi Hannah -  Maybe I could sideline as a postcard maker? LOL That would be cool!

Oh, Shirley - If you love the mountains - you'd be in heaven here!

Hi Bruce - you're right! There are so many formations - it's easy to pick out all kinds of faces and critters in the rocks.

Hi Marney - I often think about that when I see the old homesteads. I wonder about the folks that decided to make this their home, and especially about the women, and what a tough life they led out here in the west in those days.

Hey Zane! You snuck one in on me! You must have  posted your comment the same time I posted mine! Anyway - Thanks so much for stopping by - And for thinking of Miss Mary and I when you think of Colorado! I would have liked to have seen that show....

Hey Mary - There's still so much more in Colorado I want to see. And even more places I want to go back to with my camera. I think of all the places I have been before I started carrying a camera everywhere I went - And I want to go BACK! LOL

By the way photo number 4 would make a nice note card for someone like me who likes things a little out of the ordinary.

Hi Debi, Like you, I enjoy getting in the car and going "where the wind takes me".  Had a great hike with my little Lola today.  I totally agree these photos look like postcards.  What kind of camera are you using?

Hi Jenny, Do you go off on roads asking, "I wonder where this goes?" LOL The only time I don't do that is when there's lots of snow.... I use a Nikon and these were shot with both a 50mm and a 300mm.

Hi Sharon - Thank you - and you should come back out, there's lots to see!
