Converting Color to Black and White - Photography - NX2

I love black and white photography. Especially the work of Ansel Adams. Ansel Adams was a photographer and an environmentalist, and is most famous for his photographs of the American West. In 1941, he contracted with the US Government to take photographs
of the National Parks, and by 1946, he had photographed each and every one in existence at that time. His photographs remain as a testament to what the Parks were before the onslaught of tourism, and are reknowned for the sharp, contrast-y style he popularized.

He was a master at darkroom post processing. By the standards of the day, his "soft focus" technique and use of colored filters for effect were not considered acceptable.

The highest price paid for a single Ansel Adams print reached $609,600 at Sotheby's New York auction in 2006. So....he must have done something right.

I have always been disappointed in the black and white conversions I've made in Photoshop. While occasionally I've come close to satisfaction, after much manipulation and experiment, it's never turned out exactly like I'd envisioned. Enter Capture NX2. Nx2 is full featured, non destructive software from Nikon that gives the 'photographer powerful tools to quickly and easily edit their photographs'.

When it comes to black and white conversion - between Photoshop and NX2, NX2 is by far and away the best. (IMHO)

This is an example, using only the conversion tools in each, and before any other processing:

The effect I was looking for starts with a sharper, richer, and more defined conversion. Nx2 provides that. Finally, just a touch more tweaking, then sharpen the photograph.

Nik software also has a nifty little program called Silver Efex - But for now, that remains on my wish list... :)

Hi Debi:

I love Ansel Adam's work as well...

When I first started with 35mm photography, B&W is all I worked with...

Hi Jenny, You're welcome :) Picassa is a fun program, great for free, and you can do lots of cool things with it.

Hi Russell, I'd love to see that! I wonder if they have one in Yellowstone, too? I'm going there next June. Glad you enjoyed the tut!

Hey there Toula - I'd love to see some of your B&W work - Ansel Adams is so inspiring!

I can see quite a difference in the two black and whites.......there is so much to learn about photography!  I admire your skills and wish I had just a fraction of your talent.

I should try some. I am almost sure I can take black and white with a cmera setting but just have never thought about it. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Ann,  Thank you very much for the kind comment! Practice and time.... I'm still learning!

Hi Eric - yes, you probably can. I don't use the option on mine, but most cameras do it nowadays!

Deb,

Looks like a real competitor for PS for some options. BTW, I love anything Ansel Adams has done. Have several of his posters in the house. What he could do with a BW image was nothing short of magic.

Interesting side by side comparison. Looks like the PS BW is softer than the NX2 before sharpening. Kind of hard to tell, it could be better contrast on the NX2 conversion.

The shot itself...superb.

Hi Rich, Yes, he was amazing...

The PS is softer, and with alot less contrast, than NX2 out of the shoot - but it is NOT a replacement for PS! PS can do things no other program can touch :) Thanks for your comments, Rich!

Hi Debi, Thanks for sharing this wonderful post. Black and white does have it's place and can be dramatic when the subject is right. Your illustrations is superb and I know it will inspire  some great ideas ahead from the the group. Well done!

Nice composition Debi. I like the enhanced B&W version. I remember when all these conversions had to be done in the darkroom...

I love B&W photography. And no one did it better than Ansel Adams. Now with the technology that's available to us, all budding photographers can live out their dreams of capturing the essence of black and white photography just like Ansel did before us.

Hi Debi.  Nik has created some amazing software - NX2 can do so many terrific things and their U-Point technology is awesome.  I've used Silver Efex and would highly recommend it if you really get in to B&W.

Great post - thanks!

Have a great day!

Hey, Debi - I also was not thrilled with Photoshop, but I really haven't ever liked it. I use Corel Photopaint when I want to do something serious with pictures.

Hi Russel - PS surely doesn't cut it with the B&W work, but I like it for alot of other reasons. I've never used Corel, but alot of folks I know do, and love it. Does it have the same torturous learning curve that PS does? LOL

Nice post, Debi! I too have been disappointed with Photoshop's B&W conversion. I used to use it mainly as the first step in creating duotones and tritones. It always had a flat, yellowish look to it. I love the look of B&W photos, too, but my RE work is keeping me too busy to play with my photos as much as I want to!

Cheers,

Robin

Here's a rather poor snapshot I took of my friend we visited in Santa Fe. It obviously was not focused properly, and the bright light from outside was what the camera picked up. But it's rescued somewhat by being converted to B&W. It changes the mood entirely.Carol in shadow

Hi Robin, If you get a chance, try out NX2 - you will probably be much more happy with it. You could also use it to spot correct the blown out highlights. You're right about B&W changing the mood!

Debi,

This post inspired me to convert a recent photo to black and white and add it to a post after posting the color photo.  To see the results, please check out my recent post: Three Quarter Moon Over Red Lodge?
