it’s important in business to always look and act in a professional manner and to always deliver quality services and products. But who says that top-notch services and goods need to come with a top-dollar price tag? Not me! On the contrary, the only thing that beats a good sale is something awesome I can get for free.

Here are a few of my favorite free things:

  1. Raindrops on roses and whiskers on puppies (best when left on the puppy’s face rather than plucked by a child.)
  2. efax.com: My printer has a fax machine built-in but who wants to pay for that extra phone line? With efax, out-of-state homeowners can fax me a signed contract and are none the wiser that it comes via email.
  3. Homeowners’ stuff: No, I’ve never pocketed my favorite chachke when leaving a client’s home. I was recently staging a home and the client mentioned she hated a particular vase and it wouldn’t be making the move. Although I agreed the vase was wrong for her décor, it was still a great vase so she said, “Take it. It’s yours. One less thing to throw away.”
  4. Nature: I picked up some very cool sticks after a wind storm that look great on a coffee table and I love to use fresh flowers and leaves from a yard or garden.
  5. Repurposed items: My dad was just about to throw out some old windows but not on my watch! Okay, so they’re painted bright yellow at the moment. But after I paint them a nice glossy black, they’ll make funky picture frames or frames for some form of wall art. They’re long and narrow – perfect for that short wall that just needs a little something. (I have another old square window from the same home that has been stained brown and I’ve replaced the glass with a mirror and added a shelf to the bottom of it.)
  6. Craigslist.com: Great source for free moving boxes and bubble wrap. And while you’re looking for those things, you might just come across some other wonderful treasure. (craigslist.com > (select your city) > for sale > free)
  7. Singing very loudly!

I’d love to hear what some of your favorite free things are.

Lori, you are clearly just made for Freecycle!  They're your people!

The Julie Andrews tune sprang to mind immediately =)  I thought eFax charges for their services?  I use Packetel at under $4/mo.

Well done Lori!  Freebies are always nice.  Efax has made live for all of us always on the go much easier, although I do pay $1.99 a month for mine. Great post!

Nattalie: you may like spell checkers but they don't like "Nattalie" very much.

Tricia: Freecycle is great too.

Maggie and Open Home Mortgage: Efax offers a free subscription as well. You get 30 free pages of incoming faxes per month. There are two catches though: there is a fee for outgoing faxes and, although they give you your own fax number, it won't be local. Since most people have email, I can usually scan something in and send it as an attachment so I rarely have an outgoing fax and, since my incoming faxes are mostly from people out-of-state, it doesn't matter that the number isn't local.

Tricia: P.S. the advantage of craigslist over freecycle is you can SELL stuff for PROFIT at no cost too (including your own services if you'd like.)

Lori, I don't think of them as mutually exclusive - I use them both with wild abandon! ;-)

I just bought a huge outdoor rug for my deck from a seller who bought it to stage her home, which sold right away.  I got it for a song, and it is brand new!  I love craigslist.

Your old windows are great, and I love the idea you have for repurposing them.

Thanks for the post, never heard of Freecycle...will have to check it out.   Have only been on Craigslist once...interested in selling our services...is there a certain area we need to go to for that?  Thanks

Sandy: go to craigslist.com > (select your state or city) > services > real estate and in the top right corner click on "post" and take it from there. I don't know if you'll get any leads from it but, hey, it's FREE so you've got nothing to lose. Hope this helps.

My favorite free thing--advice!  Some I take, some I leave, but I'm always glad to hear it, (well, almost always. . . .)
