Yes indeed, I finally saw  woody in the forest today.   I've been searching high and low lately for one but it wasn't until the leaves came off the trees that I was finally able to capture the bird that has been eluding me and my camera.

Yes, there he was, the Pileated Woodpecker in all his glory with a crown of red.  What a beauty he was.  Did you know that the cartoon character Woody Woodpecker is based on the Pileated Woodpecker? And speaking of Woody, did you know he is going to be 60 years old next year?

Jenny -  I can't believe it . . . we pulled into our driveway this morning and Woody was there in the tree right beside us.  He couldn't have cared less and was as bold as could be.  My husband had never seen one before. I wished I had my camera but I'm so happy you were able to capture your great shots!!!

Wow -- I haven't seen a woodpecker around here for some time.  What great snapshots of this beautiful bird.

I can still hear Woody Woodpecker's laugh from the cartoons! Haven't seen too many of these in the wild. Nice pics, Jenny.

That is a great sight so long as he isn't banging on the side of your house.  They can cause some good damage to a home sometimes.

Great photos Jenny.  We've had a woodpecker in our yard every year except for this year.  I've heard it but have never seen it.  I have to say, I really missed it this year.

Great shot Jenny!  You win for getting the woodpecker first LOL  You know, we do not have this kind of woodpecker, ours are smaller and do not have that great red crown.  I will have to look it up, as to the species -- very cool pics Jenny, congratulations!

Hi Jenny, We used to have a woodpecker attack the metal chimney flue in an earlier house.  It sounded like a machine gun going off.

Jenny -

Are you sure Woody is going to be only 60?  It seems like he's older than me.

Hi Jenny - Now we know where you have been for the past few days - looking for Woody Woodpecker's relatives.  Very interesting how the animators were inspired to create his cartoon character.  Great photos.  We'll need to have a celebration next year.  I wonder if the Toronto zoo has any woodpeckers on display.

Jenny, lucky you to get those shots.  I've seen many kinds of Woodpeckers around my house in Northern Illinois but never the Pileated.

Hi Susan, darn where's that camera when you need it.  Funny he has probably been close by all year but you've never seen him because of the leaves in the tree.  Keep an eye out for him.  Maybe he'll reappear.

Hi Sharon - I can't believe I got so excited over a bird lol.  But you know we go through life so busy all the time.  Now I'm enjoying nature and all it has to offer.

Hi Joan, I'm glad I could share him/her with you.  I just love the red crest.

Hi Gary, I got some other nice photos also.  I was up on an escarpment and also saw a waterfall.

Hi John - ha ha ha ha ha - ha ha ha ha ha - ha ha ha ha ha ha ha  ( is that the right amount?) I'm trying to count the ha ha's in my head and hum it out loud and write ha ha's at the same time.  I'm confusing myself.

Hi Russ - do they actually peck on houses??  Holy smokes.  They can't find any trees?

Candice - What are you doing?  Singing backup for your hubby???

Hi Nick - I was surprised how big he was.  Now you'll have to go hunting for one.

Hi Kathy - I love the sound they make too.  Means they're hard at work looking for food, I guess.

Hi Amy - I'm sure Tanner and dad spent some time watching those DVD's while you were away.

Jenny, I'm always on the look out for a bird that I haven't seen before.  I have a copy of "Stokes field guide to birds" and whenever I spot a new bird I mark the date in the book next to the bird.

Hi Jackie - Maybe now that the leaves are off you will see them.  Get those binoculars out lol.

Nick - That's a great idea. I don't have a bird book.  Maybe I'll put it on my Xmas wish list.

Thanks for coming by Jeremy.  It was a pretty neat sight.

Hi Marc - I really should plan a trip to the zoo one day.  I want to isit the the African Lion Safari also.  It's been many years since I've been and it's less than an hour from here.

Hi Susan - I should check to see what the real lifespan of a pileated woodpecker is.  Woody looks pretty good for his age.

Hi Debra - Too bad you missed the photo op.  Where's that camera when you need it.  I got the Woddy but you got the moose.

Hi Marie - Denise - I guess you will have to take a walk in the woods and try to find him.  I'm sure you will hear him before you see him.

Mary  - I thought for sure you would beat me.  Guess what I saw today???? A beaver.  A real one.

OMG Dan - That would have been very annoying.  I think I'd get the photo then try to scare him away lol.

Hey Fred - Who's your favourite cartoon character now that you're a big boy???

Yes Steve - Nary a wrinkle on him. Hair hasn't gone gray yet either.  Lucky pecker.

OMG - That's you Jim?  I thought I had a new visitor.  Is that your Christmas season shirt?  Pretty spiffy looking.  We all know you're just a young buck.

Off to stretch class now.  Stretch the body, stretch the mind.  I wish I could stretch the body a few inches so the weight would be better distributed lol.
