New friends....no, not the two footed kind (although those are always welcome!).

For several years, now, I've been the caregiver for a handicapped relative.    They have finally had to leave assisted living, where they were able to be in their own space, and go into a care facility.    Big changes, and difficult to digest consistently, though good that 24 hour care is available.

My discovery?    The relative had a bird, a yellow and gold parakeet.

I'm an animal lover, though it's always been cats and dogs, never birds, and have rescued a lot of animals.

The bird and I looked at each other.

I asked around, to see if any bird lovers out there might like to adopt another.   No takers.

So...you guessed it!

The bird is now sitting in my office, in a new cage, and I have a book on my desk titled Home Bird Care Guide.    At night, I cover its cage, so if it hops around it won't set off the motion detector alarm at the office!

Have to admit, it's a cheerful sound and I might be imagining it, but it seems to pay attention to what I'm doing, and seems to be chirping welcome, as I walk into the office every morning.

Hmmm...do parakeets mimic sound?   Have to investigate...

Meantime, am thinking of a name...Penny?   Polly?  Patty?

Will let you know.

I enjoyed your story about your new pet bird.  How cute!  Most pets are inherited if not adopted.  My niece's fish started having babies like crazy, so she gave me a little cupfull of them, now I have hundred's of little fish on my desk........ I am trying to give them to someone else....... What a life!! HAHAHA

I love parakeets. They make great pets. Feathers or Paws, you are quite right in that they are peta just the same.

I had a parakeet (actually it was a budgie) that not only mimicked sounds, but  learned to talk. I could walk outside with him and he'd sit on my shoulder and not even think about flying. He was a great pet - especially because I didn't have to clean up after him with a scooper!

Li, congratulations on the addition to your family.  My only advice is to keep it out of drafts, I lost mine when I left it over the weekend in front of an open window.

Congrats on the new addition to your family. I have never owned a bird, just a dog.

You did a very nice deed for someone.  I think it's so sad that so many place won't take pets, especially as the elderly find them such a comfort.

Li, I had 2 parakeets that I names Abbott and Costello after my favorite comedians and I loved them both very much! I taught them to do a long, drawn out whistle. Good luck with the new addition to your family...I'm sure you will enjoy it!

I love the names, Abbott and Costello (my favourite "who's on first" routine!)...not getting a second bird, though!    I do believe in talking to animals, so will report back when the bird says hello, too.   Have decided on Penny as the name...as in: "pretty Penny"....    Just introduced her to my Jack Russell, who was most interested, and ended up barking while the bird squawked....good thing it's Sunday, and quiet in the office.   Things progress, and I've now finished the "how to care for a bird" book.   Appreciated all the comments!

I like to watch wild birds, but I've never had one for a pet. I'll be curious about how this turns out.
