Haleakala Crater on Maui

Views of Haleakala Crater from the rim are stunning.  It's not necessary to arrive for the popular sunrise to see the awesome beauty 2,000 feet below the rim.

Aloha!

Hi Dee.  I'm showing a mainland visitor the sights and took the photo yesterday when at the summit.  I was fortunate that the clouds lifted long enough for the crater to be visible.

Hi Kevin, Dan, & Bill.  Thanks for stopping by.  Bill, too bad it was cloudy & rainy but at least you didn't experience howling winds with blowing snow.  It can get pretty nasty up on top.  Yesterday was very nice though and we weren't uncomfortable in our shorts.

Gorgeous looking picture Richard!  How are the geothermal energy possibilities on Maui?  I know on the Big Island, Hawaii, they're pretty good!

Hi Myrl, thanks for stopping by..  There is no geothermal on Maui that I know of but solar hot water is now the norm.

Hi Teri & Julie and thanks for your comments.  I've been at the top and chuckled as I watched those in shorts and Tee's freeze their bunns off in howling winds and snow.

Julie, I think you're due to return, college must have been at least 5 years ago, right?

Wow. That's pretty awesome. I haven't been to Hawaii yet, but it's definitely on my list, especially Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, if I have the name right.

Hi Debra.  It does indeed.  I've taken dozens of photos of Haleakala and this is one of the better ones.

Hi Leah.  This one is 2 miles high so does seem to be in my back yard although it's a long drive to get to the summit.

Hi Marney.  It indeed is magnificant and even more so for those who hike down inside.  I had intended to do that today but was overtaken by events.

BTW, I miss your state having lived there for 35 years.
