bear hugI really wasn't prepared for what a gift it would be to meet very Active Brad in person.  When I dropped by Saturday morning, he was actively giving out bear hugs and 'Safe SEO' advice to anyone who could come up with a good bear story . . .

You see, when Brad was but a wee lad of 12, he was camping out under the stars when he was awakened in the deep of the night by a bear performing a lice check on his noggin.  Fortunately, he's found a way to transcend the terror of that encounter by facilitating a support group he calls "Bearly Recovering" for folks, like me, who have been through a Major Ursa ordeal.

OK, obviously I'm having some fun here, but that's what it was spending almost 45 minutes there on the couch with Brad . . .  fun.

I felt self-conscious of the fact that I was taking up so much of his time and attention, but he wasn't very good at projecting an awkward vibe, or darting his eyes about, or anything that would suggest he was ready for me to get lost.  He was extremely present and generous with his time . . . I basically got Rain Camp 101 accelerated (if you miss him at NAR, you'll have to make it to Rain Camp at Inman Connect 2010 in NYC next January).

As a special bonus, he made me cry when he shared what it was like dropping off his son at college for the very first time.  With 4 teens at home ranging from 16-19, his words shot straight through my heart.  Empty nest syndrome is right around the corner for me, and I'm excited and dreading it at the same time.

Brad is passionate and real, and embodies what it takes to be an effective blogger and social networker.

"Write like you would talk to someone over a frothy cappuccino.  Share, don't sell, use photos and videos, and put in 3-4 links to other sites for every 1 taking someone back to your outside blog... " [Quotation marks used recklessly]

I was touched and inspired by my visit with Brad and the vision of Active Rain that I really hadn't been able to get my head around before.  And guess what?  The point of Active Rain is not to get points (but all the same, you're going to use your God Console to grant me a few extras, right, Brad? ;-)

I'm grateful to Bill Exeter and the Deferred Sales Trust for getting me to the conference . . . making that personal connection has made all the difference.

P.S. I really did get a nice bear hug from Brad . . . anyone else score this year?

I can't even think about Empty Nest Syndrome! I only have one child... my best friend... and she's a college sophomore, who comes home almost every weekend! O_O    But I could have told Brad a good bear story... lol

Dawn, a thoroughly delightful blog post.  Clicked on all of your links.  Isn't it great when you meet people that have been so helpful online and they really are nice folks in person too??

Sounds like you had a good time, met some people, picked up excellent information and came away with another well written and timely post.

Thanks

I wish I could attend a national convention and get hugs! I am sure the event was worthwhile and meaningful.

Dawn - I've never met Brad in person, but on the phone and in emails you can tell he's a guy that loves what he does and enjoys talking to members.  Same goes for Bob as well (who I've spoken with, but not met).  Both of them truly embody the "social" aspect to what we all do here at ActiveRain.  They remember us, they talk to us about the things they know we've been up to, they mention specific posts they've read.  It's pretty incredible when you think about just how many members there are and how they treat each one.

Dawn, Brad is awesome. I have had the pleasure of meeting him and his beautiful wife Deborah many times.

He is such a teacher and encourager, Activerain would not be the same without him.

Great news!  Unfortunately we couldn't find their booth.  We were told later they were sharing space with another company and it wasn't marked with a large banner.  With the whirlwind of booths, it was very hard to find.  There's always New Orleans in 2010!

Would have loved to been there with you to sit down with Brad. Maybe New York in January for Inman.

Active Brad has always been super helpful to me whenever I needed his help. I definitely hope I make it to Inman Connect 2010 in January so I can meet him and the rest of my Active Rain family members. Great post.

Hi Lisa, sounds like you have a great relationship with your daughter . . . you've obviously cultivated a safe and fun home life, which is no small task!

Russ, it would be interesting to hear bear stories from other AR members . . . the ones who haven't encountered a bear could at least bare their souls :)

Hey Cameron, that's me and my life partner of 15 years, Terese Nielsen. (http://teresenielsen.typepad.com/) BTW, she's taking me to Rome tomorrow to assist with her artist signing . . . looking forward to some good food, good wine, and some really cool old stuff to look at.

Judi, it really was a great experience, and thanks for the feedback . . . it was a fun challenge to see how I could weave many of Brad's suggestions into a post without being too stiff or obvious about it.

Hi Paul, be careful, it sneaks up on you really quickly, like a bear in the night, :-)  When they were all in elementary school, it seemed like it would never end!

Yes Dave, hugs just might be worth the price of admission.

David, Matt, Missy, Jo . . . I'm glad I was able to join you in the Active Brad Fan Club . . . he embodies what our culture is pushing us towards . . . transparency, decency, compassion and a true joy for what we do.  All the false constructs we maintain as individuals and as a nation are, or will eventually crumble.

Joyce & Terry -  I know, it was a bit of a snipe hunt to find him, but I had read an email he sent out just prior to the event.  Are you on his Active Brad email list or RSS feed?  Once I got within range, I spotted him instantly . . . he had a green mohawk and was sporting a bright orange t-shirt with "100% ACTIVE - I SUPPORT THE A.D.D. FOUNDATION OF AMERICA" written all over it (jk :)

Dan, Rachel, Joe and James - It's definitely worth the effort to go to the events and meet people in person.  I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

And Brad, thank you, once again.  Safe travels as you galavant across the country preaching the Gospel of Google.  It's just that I can't seem to forget about that whole God Console thing . . . what else can you see with that?  It doesn't give you x-ray vision or anything, does it?  If I had a God Console, I might be tempted to do the whole 'loaves and fishes' gig with my bank account . . .

I was lucky enough to meet Brad just a day or two before you at REBar Camp in San Diego.  I was excited to meet him, and reality definitely did not disappoint.

I've been fortunate enough to meet a lot of people from AR, including Jon, Jeff, Bob and Brad : )
