Come celebrate a Lowcountry tradition at Charleston's most beloved nighttime holiday event...the Holiday Festival of Lights!  With over 2 million shimmering lights, this three-mile driving tour brings more and more light displays year after year with nearly 600 shining displays this year.

This year the park open up this spectacul20th Annual Holiday Festival of Lightsar event on November 13, 2009 and will continue through January 10, 2010.

The Festival of Lights is much more than just a driving tour!  Park the car, stretch your legs, and take in the new and exciting attractions custom-designed for holiday cheer.  There are many celebrated attractions to be sure to see and do, including:

  • Marshmallow Roasts
  • Festival Train Rides
  • Lakeside Lights Interactive Activity
  • Enchanted Forest Walking Trail
  • Gingerbread Houses
  • 50-Ton Sand Sculpture
  • Giant Greeting Cards
  • Carousel Rides
  • Gift Shops
  • Portable Climbing Wall
  • Photos with Santa
  • Santa's Sweet Shoppe Sand Sculpture at the Holiday Festival of Lights

Stroll through Santa's Village and see the meticulously crafted holiday sand sculpture constructed by hand with 50 tons of sand.  (The one here is from last year's Festival of Lights, but the photo really does not do it enough justice.)  Then you can view the sugary structures entered in the gingerbread house competition

A couple of the kid's favorite things to do while at the Lights is to make s'mores by the marshmallow roasting pit, take a snapshot with Santa, and then hop aboard a train for an up-close look at the displays.

Wander over to Winter Wonderland where a traditional 18-animal carousel ride whirls you around and around.  Don't miss the 4-by-8 foot holiday card designs created by local school students as part of a holiday art competition.  These life-size displays of Christmas themes tower above you and are quite a 20th Annual Holiday Festival of Lightssight.

Festival Hours are:

  • Fridays and Saturdays: 5:30 p.m. - 11 p.m.
  • Sundays - Thursdays:  5:30 p.m. - 10 p.m.

The entrance fees are $10 per vehicle for 1-15 guests, $25 per vehicle for 16-30 guests, or $100 per vehicle for 31 or more guests.  Receive a $2.00 discount per vehicle (Monday-Wednesday only) with the donation of a canned food item, which will benefit the Lowcountry Food Bank.

These are such great community events. But Nov 13th seems so early! I can't believe I am seeing Christmas decorations and hearing music everywhere already. Enjoy!

We do something similar here and I live to take the little ones to see. They love it and you can just see the sugar plums dance in their eyes. :0)

I adore this time of year...so much to do, so much holiday cheer!  We all need to participate in stuff like this before it is all over with!

That looks like a fun event.  Austin was going to do away with theirs because the budget said they would have to charge $5 a person when it has always been free, but instead they're scaling back. It's still $10 for parking...

Jim and Maria, There are so many great things to do and see throughout the holiday season and the festival of lights here in our town is something I have at the top of my list. Sounds like it's beautiful.

Michael: I think November 13th is rather early, too.  But this event is huge and attracts so many people that they want to offer it for an extended amount of time.  Trust me, by January the lines are pretty short to see them :)

Donna: Even if they had to charge something, I'm sure they would still get a good turnout.  This Festival isn't free, but people swarm to it.  Holiday events like this are definitely worth a few bucks :)

I love the Festival of Lights!

We have one here that seems very similar and it's always so beautiful to attend.

If your little man hasn't seen it yet, this year the brightest lights will be in his eyes, all lit up in amazement!!!
