101 Best Outdoor TownsPetoskey is an ideal place for lovers of the outdoors, as confirmed by former Men's Journal editors Sarah Tuff and Greg Melville, who have featured Petoskey in their recently released book, "101 Best Outdoor Towns."

Having experienced our "million dollar" sunsets, the authors share that "The Caribbean has nothing over the view from town as the sun extinguishes into Lake Michigan behind the creamsicle horizon." Searching for a romantic getaway? Couple the beautiful sunsets with "the back-in-time feel of the artsy downtown Gaslight District, the long beach walks and the views of Little Traverse Bay from the top of sandy Old Baldy, and you've got one of the most romantic spots in the Midwest."

Outdoor options featured in the book include the Little Traverse Wheelway bicycle path, which runs from Harbor Springs to Charlevoix, the North Country Scenic Trail and the Petoskey State Park hiking trails, fishing, swimming and paddling on area lakes, rivers and streams, and both downhill and x-country skiing at area resorts and trails.  Congratulations to Petoskey on being recognized as one of the "101 Best Outdoor Towns."  Come to Petoskey to see and enjoy all the area has to offer for yourself!

It's been far too long since I've been to Petoskey, but the recognition of this wonderful Michigan community is appropriate and totally on target!  It's one of the prettiest spots in the State!

Great place!  I have Petosky stones here in Colorado.  Have you found any lately?

Thank you everyone for your kind words.  Yes, Petoskey is a wonderful community.  Our area is blessed with great natural beauty and abundant recreational opportunities.  And yes, Eliese, I have found some Petoskey Stones lately  Actually, I had a bunch of stone put in around my house as part of our landscaping, and there are a lot of Petoskey Stones mixed in.  The kids love hunting for them!

Stefan,  When I was younger, one of the families in my neighborhood had a fireplace and wall full of semi-precious stones, various minerals, and petoskey stones. They were all tumbled by the family and took 10 years to collect.

Oh yes, the famous Petoskey stone, Michigan's state stone.  Tuesday night, I had the good fortune to take my family to Harbor Springs by boat for dinner.  We stopped off at Harbor Point for a swim and the water was crystal clear with no wind, giving a good view of the bottom for Petoskey stone hunting.  My daughter and I found a pretty good size Petoskey stone, which is pretty rare find nowadays, the beaches are so picked over.  I will have to do a separate post on the Petoskey stone.
