Do you judge a book by its cover?

What does your cover have on it?

Should it matter?

While browsing the new blogs today, I came across Bill Cherry's blog Whats going on here

Curiosity got the best of me...I had to check out  Tattoos for Ladies- The answer.  After reading the mixed reviews on this blog I felt I had to post on this.

I am a tattoo sportin', Harley ridin', weekend campin', oil changin', house cleanin', MOM and Mortgage Specialist that can write a loan just as good as the man dressed in the 3 piece suit or the woman dressed to the nines. Should that matter to you, if you are provided with the service you expect, with a rate on your mortgage that is very competitive, with closing costs that are low? Should any of this be offensive to anyone?

Now some of my clients are aware of my other talents outside of business, some are not.  How I conduct my business and portray my level of professionalism is all that should matter.

Don't judge a book by its cover....

Several months after financing a purchase for one of my long time clients (this was their 4th loan with me) my husband and I were out riding our Harley's on Easter.  We stopped at the local auto store for a light that had burned out on my bike.  This particular day was very chili, temperature was close to 50 degrees or so.  We were both dressed in full leathers.  Jacket, chaps, gloves, boots and helmet.  When we came out of the store I spotted this client getting into his car.  I called out his name and he shot me a look, as if to say, who the heck are you and how do you know me?!  I pulled down my sun glasses and said, "It's Kim."  He got out of his car and gave me a big hug.  He then said to me, you need to put a picture of you like this on your desk, no one would ever believe you are the same person.  To say the least he was shocked to see me in my "riding get up" or to even know that I rode a motorcycle.  My client learned that day, that you can never judge a book by its cover.  He is still a client of mine and has referred several friends and family members.

I will write loans in Dupage County, Kane County, Lake County, Cook County for many clients to come.  Many will not know my "other" life and some will.  But to conform to what others may think is their idea of professional is not my way.

Inside my book there are many different stories and many different pictures.  But the cover one day may look different the next day.

I guess my point is no matter what cover there is today, everyday I will act with professionalism, I will return your calls, I will provide you with service you would expect.  I am a mortgage lender today with 4 tattoos and 7 piercings.  That is a choice I have made, but the person on the inside is no different than the person without the tattoos and piercings.

Take it from someone who has used Kim's services almost exclusively for the last 4 years. She is as professional as it gets!!! When you meet Kim face to face......you would never know she is a tattoo sportin', Harley riding', body piercin' mortgage lender! Besides....there is life outside of mortgage lending!!! Actually, we think we knew Kim for about 2 years before we found any of this out about her! If you want reliable, professional service.....you call Kim Murphy of 1st Advantage Mortgage!!!

I stand behind ya. Live life to it's fullest. As long as you get your work done.

Doesn't matter to me...want to come work in my office? I have a thing for tatoos and pleated skirts, so no pleated skirts because I would never get any work done with a pretty girl like you her.

GO GETTEM GIRL!!  Live and Let Live!!  If you come through when it counts...isn't that all that matters?!?!   If you're realiable...if you call back when or before you say you will...if you are honest and hard working... and if you're private life doesn't effect your work...it shouldn't matter!!  You're a professional in the mortgage business and that is what really matters!!  The good details are for the clients and friends who get to know you better...before and/or after the transaction!!  Keep on Leatherin' girlfriend!!

PS...Has your husband bought a shirt that says "on the back" the B*tch Fell Off for the days you ride together???  I saw that one time and LMAO!!!  Love the Harley 'tude!!

Kim- Your absolutely right, you can't judge a book by its cover, but unfortunately we live in a world where we are constantly being judged by others.  I don't give a rats a$$ normally what people think about me and the way I look except when doing business.  I got tats as well, but I  cover them when at work.  Being a loan officer I have to appear professional to my clients, this is their biggest and most important financial decision they make.  Appearance in the business world is vital to survival, whether we like it or not.   Don't get me wrong I can't stand wearing ties and suits,  but it is a small sacrifice I make to support my family.  Trust me , if I could I would originate loans in shorts and a tee shirt.  Maybe even a speedo "WTF" hell no. Ha Ha

Rod...  Unfortunatley you are right about the world of business!  I know I cant change the world in their thinking, but if I can help one person to understand that if a person is acceptable to you by what you cant see, they should be just as acceptable when you can see them.  For example:  If I was referred by someone or a cold call and that person was happy with my rates, service, programs etc as they talked to me over the phone then met me in person and lets say I had full sleeves, should that change their mind about me, NO, it shouldnt!  Thanks for stopping by!

Do they make them for the Harley Mamas??? You need one...put it on your birthday list!  He would be proud to have YOU parade around on it!!  :-)  I would love to have you put a picture "parading around" in it!!  Glad to make you GIGGLE!!!  :-)

PS...Maybe I'm in the wrong business or just need a back-up career in comedy!!  hahaha

I can't change the color of my skin, and lord knows so many of us get judged on that. So judging someone with a tatoo on a Harley? That's easy!

Susie...  Your killing me!

Irene... Great statement!  Quick story, my daughter was starting Kindergarten (way back when) and her teacher was African American, when she came home from school she mentioned it and said what if I dont like her.  I asked her if it was ok for the other kids to not like her in the summer when she gets really tan, because her skin color changed?  She got my point, never had an issue again!  Thanks for stopping by!

Remember you can choose your life style and the way you portray it and I can choose to go elsewhere.  I prefer to work with people who I think look professional from the way I want professional portrayed.  When you choose to be different you can expect to be treated differently and consequently draw from a smaller pool of prospects.  You choose it, now eat it.

Denise... I do respect your right to choose, HOWEVER I do not feel I choose to be different, maybe different from you, but what is "normal?"  There is no such thing!  I portray professional, I look professional, I emulate professional, therefore I choose to be me!  Thank you for weighing in with your opinion.

Take it from us.....We have used Kim for a long time.....You would NEVER know that she has this side of her!!! She is as professional as they come!!!! AND if anyone has read any of her blogs.....she is an extremely intellegent loan officer at that! She has a lot to offer a client!! It was around 2 years before we even knew about this side of her and she is our sole mortgage lender!!!

OK my Harley riding tattooed friend.  Let's hear about the tats!  I have a very colorful Gecko!  I took my daughter when she was 18 to get one and her friends convinced me to get one while I was waiting.  So I figured..what the heck..I picked the cutest little 1.5" gecko.  And when I was done...she's about 7" long!  The guy said he couldn't put such a small thing on my large chest.  No regrets..she's teal and purple and is drop dead gorgeous!  Her name is Lizzy!  But I agree about riding and piercings, etc.  As long as we don't show up looking like a Christmas Tree and you treat others professionally, with integrity and honesty, we will be respected!  Nice to see you have long term cleints/agents that think the world of you!

Vicki...  Coming from another tattoo sportin', harley ridin' woman in business, I appreciate your support.  You obviously are a very successful realtor with professionalism and tattoos!  The tattoos are hearts with my kids names, a dream catcher, a back piece to match my bike, which covers an old sun.

Cyndee... My long lost friend!  I have missed you!  You must be busy!  We all have many chapters to our books which is the best part of getting to know someone!

Thank you both for your support and comments!

Kim, go tell em girl! This is 2007, not 1967!
Too bad you weren't at the Active Rain Celebration in Orlando, TLW was having a blast with our tat's and real disappointed there were only 2 piercings! She put the photo's in her post on the party. I got there and the first thing Lydia Heaton did was ask me where my tat's were, I was stunned! How did she know I had any? Talk about a great ice breaker!! She was lifting up the back of my shirt looking for more!

Lysa... I just checked that out!  Wish I was there!  You are so right its 2007 and it has become the "norm" so I don't think I am limiting my options for clients.  I guess to each his own!  I love em!  I let my son get one while we were in Florida this year, only need to be 17 there.  I wanted to be there for his first one and wanted to make sure it wouldn't be something he may regret later.  Thank you so much for your support!

Kim, you are right on this one, it has happened to me, the the title of a book or blog do not have sense or it is appealing and then when I just read some of that, it is very good good, :)

Kim, You're welcome! Times are changing, people need to get with it. Mine are on my back.. some woman can put the armbands on and get away with it. Not me.. Gotta say the tat in the photo that led you to write this post, of the wolf? I wasn't impressed with the work at all. If your ever back this way let us know!

Agreed we shouldn't judge a book by it's cover. Unfortunately most people do without realizing it. Before I started in this business I had very long hair. I cut it off to look more professional. I thought that less people would want to get a loan from someone who looked like Greg Allman. lol. Sometimes we have to make sacrifices.

I couldn't agree more about the suggestion to include your "leather" pic in your office.  I have on my book shelf pic's of my 11 (year old) daughter sitting on my old '84 GoldWing, pic of myself riding our of the Badlands in South Dakota (always a discussion piece) and another of me shortly after picking up (at the time) my new '99 Wing.

I am always surprised how many clients ride and somehow think that may have an impact on their mortgage application if it was known that they too were bikers.  Can't impress on you enough the amount of business I have received from my "biker" clients simply by making them aware I am one too.

Dave... I am also surprised on how many clients ride in addition to how many are surprised I ride.  With more and more woman riding, I wouldn't think it should be so much of a surprise.

WOW!  11 daughters???  How do you find time to ride?

I wont ride faster than my Guardian Angels!  I have several that watch over me!

Thank you for your comments and stopping by!

LOL, sorry about that I must have been distracted when typing the comment as it should have read my 11 year old daughter, but I think you already knew that.

That's the same 11 year old that went to sleep one night and woke up 17 but now she is looking like she is 22.

Loved it!! Many are surprised I ride too, but with more woman riding, I wouldn't think it should be so much of a surprise.  I guess I do not look the part according to them. I am a girly girl who wears 3" heels on a daily basis and a pant suite to boot, but when I ride I wear my leathers and still find that higher boot heel.

Candace....Please let me know when you do get it!  I want to see a picture.  Once you learn to ride, you really can ride almost anything big or small.  I do suggest starting small just to get the feel, instead of feeling like your fighting the weight of the bike.  Take a class!  I started on a 250 Virago and took a class on a Buell.  2 weeks later, I knew I needed something bigger!  You go girl!  Thanks for putting me in and the link later!

I just started reading this blog.  WOW, Denise doesn't think we can be professionals with tats and riding scooters?  That really hurt my feelings.   Too bad it does NOT hurt my business like she says. Why is she even in this group reading these blogs?

Anyway, now that I got that off my chest, thanks for the AR Bikers group!!!

Kim, I just found the groups for motorcycle enthusiasts...and love your idea for a t-shirt "This B*TCH didnt fall off, she rides her own!"

I'd love to get one for myself. Every-time I go out with my husband on our bikes men and women talk to me as if I sit on the back. As if!

Like you, I'm tattoo'd and pierced...OK, the last piercing came out 2 years ago but I used to have 11. I had them for decades and no they were not on my face! ;)

I'm bummed about the riding. This past summer I only got out 2 times so I sold the thing. I can take the husbands out when the opportunity presents.

I'm saving my pennies for the new BMW GS800!

Kim,

I am a litle late to the party here (just joined AR recently) but I so agree with you that we should be who we are - proudly - and not be swayed by the masses who conform because of what others may think of them.

Although I have no tatoos (my son and spouse pick up the slack for me though in that area) I am a leather-wearing Harley girl on the weekends and feel as comfortable & proud holding myself out in public as a "biker" as I do in when I am in my professional "real estate" attire.  I promise my real estate clients honesty and integrity in my business and I live that same way.  To deny my love of biking to impress or avoid judgement by a curtomer would defy my public promise to them.  Just keeping it real!

Have a grand day and happy biking!

Just had an experience yesterday where I had to defend myself for having tattoos to another Realtor!  Unbelievable.  I walked up to a conversation she was having on how this person was so dirty looking, tattoos, totally trashy!  Of all the nerve!  Once again I had to get into the "Don't judge a book by it's cover" speech.  I doubt it sunk in!

What a great blog...I'm new to real estate, I've only been doing this for a month and struggle everyday to find outfits to cover my tattoos. I love my tattoos but I've got a chest piece and a full sleeve and never realized how difficult it would be to find tops that don't have either 3/4 sleeves or low cut tops! Being young and new to this field, I feel even more pressure to "look professional" even though I've held many professional positions in the past!
