There are a few different things to keep in mind when tweeting.  It is always a good idea to keep your tweet short enough that it can be reposted.  This means leaving about 30-40 characters available at the end of your tweet so others can retweet it.  Another key to tweeting is be concise.  You are only given 140 characters so you have to say what you need in a short sentence.  With a limited amount of characters, it is important to stay concise and to the point.  Along with this is to be upfront about your intentions.  Make sure you are aware that the views on your twitter may also be taken as representing the views of your employer.  In many instances, you are considered a spokesperson for your company whether you are intending to be or not.  While you need to be careful about what you are saying, you also need to be personable.  People follow you on twitter to know more about you and your personal views.  They are not following you to have the corporate marketing thrown at them.

There are also a few things to avoid when tweeting.  One thing to avoid is using abbreviations.  In general, people don’t like to read a tweet with abbreviations because they have to figure out what abbreviation means.  They don’t want to have to take the time to decipher every tweet.  With this in mind, people are more likely to skip over a tweet if it has improper grammar as well.

Finding a decent subject to tweet about can be difficult.  You do not want to constantly tweet about how great you are.  There should be a balance between personal tweets and interesting information.  When writing a tweet, use some of the keywords you are using to be found on Google.  This will generate more traffic to your main website as well.  It is also acceptable to link to a blog or article from another person as a part of your twitter post.
