Just wanted to make a quick mention of a new site that might come in handy.

Thus far I have posted on using Windows Live Writer to compose and post your blogs to AR and to your personal blogs.  In reverse, copying HTML to Live Writer and saving as draft will back your info up for safety on your hard drive...

but what if your HD dies??

Try this site...and let me know what you think.

I did all three of my blogs... yes, even ActiveRain!

The first thing you do is set up an account...

then you add your blog posts...one by one

you will do a FULL Backup to start out

then the system will read your RSS feed daily to get your new posts backed up.

The achilles heel might be if you're only using ActiveRain.  I have only gotten it to back up 27 of my posts.  That means that 108 posts are still at risk.

Another nice feature is that you can manage the posts... which will reveal those all important HTML codes for you to copy and paste!

Lastly, there are MOVE and RESTORE features.  If your blogsite goes down, you can restore old posts.  If you leave Wordpress for Typepad, just tell it where to move the posts!

Enjoy... and comment on your findings - whether you have better luck backing up your AR posts!

David, what a great tip!  I have lost countless draft articles for one reason or another.  This service sounds like a great solution!

Ugh!  My hard drive went about 3 weeks ago. I lost years worth of stuff, you would think I would have learned!

Backup stuff always makes me nervous!  Does this mean blogs are "not" for all eternity?  Good info.

Ann... someone did a post on that today... don't give up on the drive!! go get a hard drive enclosure and connect it to another computer via USB - you could still save the files.... for whatever reason techs just don't even try. i had 2 "dead" hard drives and the tech told me this would never work... it did

and it did for many other people I spoke to!!

Scott, Dale and Matt - thanks!

Leah!! BAD GIRL!! SAVE AS DRAFT every 5-10 min of typing!  Same as in Word, Excel, Point etc!

David, I might try this, but I have two hard drives on my computer.  I use one as my main drive and the other as my back-up.  I have been doing this for years and it has always worked well for me, but your suggestion seems to be something that is worth me considering doing.

Thnaks for the tip, Backup is something I sure need to do more of, first my computer then my blog.

Great info David.  I am going to try it.  I have been trying to figure out a way to back up everything easily.

ok so the title was a bit of a "Name that Tune"/Pop Media reference... and no one's mentioned it yet !!

I am going to give this a try.  There is nothing worst than working up a sweat typing up a great little post only to hit submit and you get that white page with the tiny writing saying something about an error.  Then you go back and its GONE!!  ughhhhh..... I will see if this helps!

Interesting thought, I can see it coming in handy for moving your blog from one place to another but not sure about backing up for the other reasons.  I type my posts in Notepad and save them there until I am ready to post them so I guess that is my form of backup.

I'm checking in a few minutes, sounds great..

Thanks,

This is a great tool (I'm backing up as we speak).  I usually write in Google Docs, which saves as you write, but once I post in draft mode I always make some changes, and maybe even add pictures, so the copy I have in Google Docs is not always true to the finished product.  This is going to be a great tool for me, so thanks for sharing!

Kimberly - if THAT is what you're looking for... definitely look @ my posts on Windows Live Writer...

this is for after you've posted, then it goes and hunts down your post and saves it for you.

Everyone else... Better safe than sorry!

thank you so much for sharing this.  We so often forget to back up until it is toooo late and soooo much is at stake.  This is a wonderful resource.  Thx  Janie
