Chemistry definitely has a role in selecting a real estate agent. It even starts with the presentation to the public from their web site to a profile description of what they say they specialize in. A younger person may want a younger agent. An individual that wants personal attention might completely steer clear of a team or large group type of agent because they feel they are too impersonal. A shy person may run away from a high ego TOP PRODUCER. Someone wanting to buy farm and ranch properties would shun the residential specialist.

Even marketing yourself with years and years in the business may be a turn off to someone who perceives you don't have the marketing prowess to use the latest tools for the greatest effect for Internet exposure in selling your property.

I have asked clients why they "didn't" chose a particularly well qualified Realtor. Well, some said, it looked like all they did was have listings and lost touch with showing homes and working with buyers. On and on it goes. Many agents with longer careers in the business get dulled to fresh eyes looking at what their materials actually say they are targeting, not realizing that if they do work with buyers but their materials don't say that, they are losing business.

So have another person with neutral eyes review your materials from time to time and tell you what THEY think you are trying to attract into your life and business as your "ideal client." People don't have to work with any agent out there. And Realtors should know who their ideal client is. Some like vanilla, some like chocolate ice cream. It is not a right or wrong, but just trying to get a good match out there for everyone with the business.

What a great post about looking at your business and what your image says to many potential clients.  I too have had this discussion with many seasoned agents who do not understand the younger buyer today who makes up a lot of the merketplace here in AZ.

Oh I'm so excited to be your first  second comment Mr Woltal... You are right, if there is good chemistry, it is a win win situation for everyone.   By the way, have you met my friend and new blogger Noah Levy..  She just started and wrote an amazing post.  Please take the time to meet her.

Great post! I agree that having someone else look at your materials and tell you what they think you're trying to attract is a great thing to do. I'll be doing that soon! All the Best!

The chemistry factor works both ways as well. I have had potential clients that I knew I could not work for and acted accordingly.

The chemistry can be built if you understand the personalities of the people you are working with.

Gary,

As always....you make a very valid point....I will take you up on that.  And with respect to finding a fit....this is tremendously important!  I have always been a firm believer in that service businesses (which I do believe Real estate is...not sales....sorry I know I am in the minority most likely) actually are based a great deal on personality fits...you definitely need to know your stuff...but you need to fit as well...as you said...some are vanilla...some chocolate...and you know that is what makes life great!

Gary:  Always a good idea to have someone else look things over and I welcome feedback.  The image I think I'm putting forth may not be at all what is coming across and I really like to know that.  Nothing like having clients when personalities have the right fit!

Gary - There is something about your blogs that always make me smile even before I get past your caption line.  The moment I read your subject line on this one, I got this visual image of sellers and buyers seeking out agents with compatible pheromones:-)

Gary ~ Their is a chemistry or not. A good agent will profile and adapt. We are all different and we should listen and listen and then take control..

Hi Gary!  I love the win-win of good chemistry--and you've gotta love the referrals that those win-win clients send you too--they're just the same!

Have a fabulous Friday...

I quite often chose a Realtor based on the Realtors need. If the Realtor didn't need to meet me, preferring to send a staff member to give me the listing presentation, then I didn't need that Realtor.

Best wishes!

People like  to feel good about themselves.  Trying to make sincere compliments to people goes a long way.

Very good points about the initial presentation, whether on line or in print.  And then it boils down to perceptions and availability.  Thanks Gary, something we should all remember.

Gary, I agree with you. People like to work with someone with whom they feel comfortable .

Yes, so true!  If people make a decision on a house within the first few seconds, they probably do the same with a Realtor.  Sometimes it just comes down to "fit".

Personalities definitely must match.  So right Gary we must re-evaluate our marketing material regularly!

Gary - Chemistry beats out the Top Pruducer almost every time.  But, top producers are usually those who have learned how important it is to be a chameleon.

Gary...I think the internet allows potential clients to peak into the personal and professional lives of the agents they might select to represent them.  Internet access is like a chemistry experiment, mixing a little of what you're looking for from one test tube to another in order to come up with the right formula of who to use to represent you.
