The Real Estate industry offers various ways that you can change your identity and marketing campaign to fit your targeted market.  Dare to be different, if not a little crazy, in your advertising and you will stand out from the crowd.  Once you have been "noticed" you can deliver a powerful message about why the consumer should use you over anyone else.  Hey, you were different than anyone else in your marketing, so you must be different in how you do business, right?

So where can you go with this.  The roads are truly endless.  I suggest wrap your secret identity around somethign else you are passionate about.  For example, I could go around as "The Mortgage Pilot" and use "bringing your loan in for a smooth landing." And in fact, I am setting up a campaign around that right now.

Florida Mortgage SupermanI suggest staying away from "identities" already being used, such as "Mortgage Superman", as you can see I have used that one too.  The thing is that campaigns using secret identities can be a lot of fun developing and they are a way you can truly stand out from the crowd.  Use them wisely as they can backfire on you as well.

Another identity I use (I stopped the mortgage superman for now) is the Florida Mortgage Specialist which I centered around the medical profession using common medical conditions to describe financial ailments instead (Florida Mortgage Doctor was unavailable for legal reasons).  It is a work in progress as I am always trying to be more creative with it.  It doesn't hurt that my brother is a Chiropractor, so I can get more terms down as time goes on and put more of a medical twist on it.  For more on that campaign, visit www.mortgagemeds.com.  Keep in mind that most of this work is copyrighted and cannot be used without my permission, sorry.

Florida Mortgage SpecialistWhy did I go that route with this campaign?  Well, simply put, my unique process is called MEDS™, so using Mortgage MEDS™ we "Provide Customized Mortgage Prescriptions"™.  How can you not take a campaign with medical crossovers with a program titled like that?

So, yet another identity is born.

Brian Brady had his own identity which I hope he will revive and use more often as I think he was on to something good.  His "ARMS Dealer" approach was perfect in my opinion in this day and age where ARMs are being portrayed in negative fashion.  His posts, such as The ARMS Dealer WACCs Another Client, were a very good fit.

Hopefully I have encouraged you to spread your wings, dig deep inside, or whatever you need to do to bring out the secret identity within you.  Try developing a marketing campaign, website, blog, or whatever that is centered on this identity and see where you can take it.  Who knows, maybe you will see an increase in business simply because you dared to be different.

For more ideas, particularly along the line of comic book heroes, check out Jason Price's post, Who are you? I'm Batman (A Theory on Sales/Selling).  Here he talks about how salespeople tend to resemble their favorite comic book hero.  He also links to DC COmics and Marvel Comics to get a breakdown of the heroes characteristics.  I think it is a good starting point if you are stuck.

(Be sure your identity does not violate any laws or infringe on any copyrights)

First off you look great in tights..just kidding.  I don't really have a identity.  I just have my reputation.

Nattalie..."God" might be overdoing it a bit, but maybe Queen in your case.  Try something out and see what you can come up with.

Matt...I let myself go after that picture, lol.

Reputation is something you need to protect, but do not let that hold you back from trying something new if it "fits" you and doesn't screw up your reputation.  I have found that you can employ "outrageous" advertising, including mock identities, and be very successful with them.

Being different helps get your targeted audience's attention and then you send them your message without harming your reputation.  The key is hitting your targeted audience and the identity can actually help eliminate some of those that you wouldn't want for clients anyways.

Jeff...No, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night...just kidding.

I brain never seems to stop sometimes.  I usually think of ideas while I am on overnights these days.  My trip today puts me in Kingston, Jamaica for the night, so it will likely be a brainstorming session today in the hotel, time permitting (shorter overnight).

I do use different identities, but I'm finding that too much time on the computer takes away from the real deal of getting out and meeting people.

Great advise

Joslyn...I think Angela is correct in stating that you should "spice it up".  Just about every realtor approaches themselves in the same way.  They use different taglines to say the same thing and it does not truly stand out.  Also, being the "difference" does not display being a better difference or a valid enough reason to choose you over another.

Angela...Thanks for chiming in for Joslyn.

Great Post Rob, but you scared me with the picture in the tights!!!  LOL  Better check the pressure in the cockpit on the next overnight!

Seriously, I whole heartedly agree with the point you make here.  It's that thinking outside the box that makes you really stand out!

Joslyn...I just checked out your profile...since you love to write how about something like: Joslyn Panka, the Novel realtor of Minnesota?   You could work it around a novel, each county you cover could be a chapter, etc....or maybe each listing or marketing campaign can be a spoof from the title of a famous novel...just a thought...good luck with it.

Thanks again for the great ideas, Rob...maybe I should try out some tights!!!  LOL

I am not a Mortgage Specialist, I am a Signing Agent I'd love to put my Mighty Pen to use  if one you wonderful people have a signing in Northern Texas, keep me in mind.  :) Who wouldn't want 'Super Pilot Mortgage Med Man' or 'Novel girl Realtor' as a reference?

Lacey...I like it.  See if you can do a little edting in Photoshop or similar program to create a "one of a kind" spin on the graphic.  I don't handle loans in Texas, but I will keep you in mind if I come across someone who is.

I completely agree and this goes into branding.  As an agent I have to be careful about the truth in advertising laws.  I have to have my full name - as it is spelled out on my license, or I am in violation.  I am not sure if this is the same with lenders, but Branding is huge - and standing out is a must.

Adam...You absolutely got it.  It is about branding yourself (not just your company).  I am sure there is a way to use your ame as it appears on your license and a secret identity without violating the law.  The best thing to do is to contact your governing agency and clear it ith them before implementation.  I called the OFR (Florida's governing agency for mortgage brokers) and cleared it with them before launching any campaign of mine.

I love this blog! I use "Just Say HELP ME RHONDA for All Your Real Estate Needs!" I am a little cheesy so I can pull it off. I have a t-shirt with the slogan and on my car. So far business is steady.

Help me Rhonda was a great fit!

I am surprised Ms. Horton has not capitalized on "Who?"

Like everyone else- I too am looking for something that has a BAM factor

Not sure which direction I should go in....either
