Rotary Club of Spring Hill, Florida Delivers Dictionaries to 3rd Graders

"The limits of your language are the limits of your world." - Ludwig Wittgenstein

Student DictionaryThis is the message printed on this year's edition of the student dictionaries that members of the Rotary Club of Spring Hill, Florida presented to the third graders of the Elementary Schools in Hernando County, Florida.

The dictionary project is an annual effort by Rotary International to promote language skills and awareness among young students as they are becoming proficient in reading and comprehension.

Spring Hill Rotary Annual Dictionary ProjectMet with curious looks from the students as we entered each classroom, the exitement of receiving a book "to keep forever" soon took over.

From looking up a special word to discovering graphs of the solar system, the multiplication table, or flipping to the last page of the book to discover the longest word in the English language with 1909 letters - it is a pleasure and a reward in itself to watch young children be so enthusiastic about reading and finding out about the world.

With this kind of curiosity, enthusiasm, and desire to learn and know, the world for these kids will be limitless.

Hi Sylvia!  It's good to hear about children being grateful for dictionaries with the Internet being the source for everything!  1906 letter word? GEE!!!

Diane, you are right. But you cannot touch the internet like you can a book!

Silvia, it is always nice to do something for the kids/school, and it is very nice of you to participate it.  I like to see kids learning and want to learn, it is priceless.

It's really good to read this kind of post. Kids need us and your Rotary is just another shiny example of a great group doing good in the world.  Thanks for sharing the story.  Kids that learn to read BOOKS - not just on the internet have a whole world opened up to them.

Thank you Lou!

Rita, it is very amazing to see how genuinely happy these kids are to receive a gift like that.

Anna 'Banana', I wholly agree!  I grew up with books and remember how they helped me learn so much about all kinds of different things.  I remember receiving my first dictionary and coming across words and terms I had never encountered before.  I don't think you can necessarily do that on the internet as you have to tell it what to look for.

Silva, I can still remember the effect books began to have on my life around 8 to 9 years old.  My appreciation for reading seemed to really kick into gear then.  Your are picking a great time to make a deposit in the lives of these young children.

Terry, and once you have looked it up, will you post a recording of you pronouncing it?  lol

Steve, thanks, I think that's why this grade level is chosen to get them engaged when their interest is at a high.

Hi Silvia,

Our club uses the funds raised by the Sargeant at Arms to buy books for each 3rd grader each year. It's a great program! We ran short of funds last year, leaving one entire classroom of about 20 kids without a new book. We announced that at our next Rotary meeting and raised $400 on the spot - every child got a book after all. Fun stuff.
