Equestrian Property in San Diego

San Diego may not have the reputation of being horse country such Louisville (KY), Upperville (VA), Unionville and Mainline Philadelphia (PA), Southern Pines (NC), Hamilton (MA) or Saratoga Springs, (NY), but we have our share of equestrian properties, polo, horse shows and more.

And some communities are fairly well known by those in the know as being centers for horse lovers.

The Del Mar Racetrack is world famous for its horse racing, of course, as well as for the 3-week long Del Mar National Horse Show (western week, hunter and jumper week, dressage week). The San Diego Polo Club, in Rancho Santa Fe, has one of the longest polo seasons in the country, offering matches on Sundays from May through October, with some of the finest players and horses in the world.

There are plentiful participants in all facets of equestrian activities throughout the county, from simple horseback riding and riding lessons, to world-class and Olympic caliber sports.  North Coast Equestrian Park and Rancho Los Amigos, both in Encinitas, offer a range of services.

There are a number of retail and consignment establishments around too, including Bits Equestrian Outletin Solana Beach (at 616 Stevens Avenue; 868-702-2487). There is a least one major publication dedicated to the horsey set, "California Horsetrader" (with horses to buy, a broad range of services, equipment and real estate), as well as multiple websites, Horsetrader being one, and Southern California Equestrian Directory another.

Equestrian sports are known for being expensive - for participating in the sport itself, for the horses, care and upkeep, training, and the property. Certainly one can own a horse and keep it at home fairly inexpensively (as long as the area is zoned for it and you have sufficient land), but in general equestrian properties are fairly pricey. Communities such as Del Mar, Vista, Elfin Forest (a rural community of west Escondido bordering San Marcos), Rancho Santa Fe (the most expensive community), Olivenhain (an area of east Encinitas bordering RSF), Rancho Bernardo, and Ramona are known for having equestrian property, among others in San Diego County.

In general, finding equestrian propertynear the San Diego coast is difficult and expensive. You will be hard pressed to find much under $1 million (some properties in Vista and occasionally in Olivenhain and Elfin Forest), with equestrian properties in Rancho Santa Fe that begin at least in the $1.5 - $2 million range and can climb to over $20 million. Most properties in Elfin Forest, due to its rural nature, are between $1 million and $2 million.

Jeff, now I need to write about our horse community here in Temecula Valley. We have lots of quarter horse and cutting horse ranches out here.

Thanks, Kaye. Now to catch the eye of buyers and sellers! :)

Sandra - great idea. I have become aware of that as I have done some research. I have had two people inquire about horse property who are out of the area. You never know. Thanks for your comments.

Jeff - This is such a great post.  As always, you've packed it with lots of interesting information.  You've also done a great tie-in to all the other places across the nation that are known for horse country.  Absolutely excellently crafted to attract the horse set who may have not considered beautiful San Diego as an option.  Great Post, Jeff.  You just keep setting the bar higher and higher every time.

Thanks, Marlene. I grew up in horse country outside Philadelphia and was pretty involved myself until college, so I know a bit about it. Given my past interest and some recent requests...well, it just made sense to me. Thanks for the compliment.

Jeff - Yes, you do set the bar high for Localism posts! Another great post! I never think of San Diego as a city with horse property.

I guess since I was born and bred in Kentucky.......that is horse country. My grandfather owned the property that is now the Kentucky Derby and had a farm close by. Those were the days!

Paula - yes it IS a bit of a surprise.

I'm a Louisville boy myself! ;-) But only there a short time. I have never even attended the Derby but have visited a number of years ago - what a beautiful area. Neat place to grow up!
