Clearly Lethbridge

clearly lethbridge

Today I had a meeting with Doug, a salesman for Clearly Lethbridge, a new online directory and marketing website that has launched in Lethbridge.  The intention of the site seems to be to create an online directory of local businesses and to act as a central hub which will help to increase the search engine optimization and placement of each of the advertisers through the cooperative efforts of all.  This is much like many of the online directories which attempt to do the same thing for businesses within specific categories, except that in the case of Clearly Lethbridge, the common thread is that all of the businesses are local to Lethbridge.

The company has some solid backing and is an extension of Clear Sky, who is a media company which operates several local radio stations.  This should help Clearly Lethbridge enjoy some longevity while it attempts to build an advertiser base.  There have been other Lethbridge business directory websites that have come and gone, some are still sitting dormant on the internet.  A few of them have been good ideas, but have not continued due to the constant need to solicit advertisers and to keep content updated.  Hopefully Clearly Lethbridge will have better luck.

At this point in time I declined to purchase advertising on the Clearly Lethbridge site, primarily because I accomplish much the same goals through my blog here, in addition to my other websites:

LethbridgeLoans.com

LethbridgeRealEstateBlog.com

LethbridgeRealEstateOnline.com

I also do a substantial amount of social media marketing through twitter, facebook, and other sites.  My web content is often syndicated out via over 400 directories and another 400 RSS feeds.  Because of the combined reach of these sites and their syndication, the content that I publish reaches thousands of people.

As a simple test, I am writing this blog at 1am, Friday Nov 20th, 2009.  I would expect that if you were to search "clearly lethbridge" tomorrow on your favorite search engine that this very post would already be indexed and ranking at or near the very top.  Try it out and see if my marketing is as effective as I claim it to be.

Thanks for the comments Kathy.

I usually delete the spam comments right away, but sometimes forward them on to AR staff and let them delete them if it appears they are mass spam efforts.

Thanks for googling it up for me and checking the ranking.  I noticed that of the top 6 google results, 3 or 4 of them are my.  Pretty funny really.

good that your blog comes up in the search. But really it has nothing to do with Lethbridge or what ClearlyLethbridge is providing to local businesses.

Perhaps not Bob,

but why would I or anyone else purchase advertising on a site that cannot out rank any site of my own?  My point of posting this was that I can put up a single blog post keyworded to 'clearly lethbridge' and rank well within an hour.  I guarantee you that clearly lethbridge cannot do that, I would even bet they cant rank a page within a week or 2.

I would be more then willing to test that theory against any key words page you want to post to clearly lethbridge.

I'm not trying to attack clearly lethbridge, just stating that any one of my personal websites outranks, out optimizes, and has more traffic.  Clearly lethbridge should be paying to advertise on my sites by that regards.  Quoting stats about one single site in some random US city that is successful means little to a local business.

There are at least 3 currently operating websites in Lethbridge that offer the same service as clearly lethbridge and have been at it for much longer.  There are another 3 that have basically gone stagnant and do not operate anymore.  Whats the lifespan of Clearly lethbridge?  I expect that it will be as soon as the market of business owners who are razzle dazzled to see themselves on the "internets" dries up, a year is my best guess.

Consumers are wise enough to see that there are tons of other online marketing options, all with more traffic then clearly lethbridge, and most cost less money.  Heck, I help a dozen realtors and mortgage people a week do the same thing, for FREE.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment though.  Any time you want to debate the issue send me a message.  Doug did a good job in his presentation, its the fact that the product is inadequate that will be the end of it all eventually.

ps. sorry i forgot to mention in my last reply...

I also have the ability to syndicate any of my posts here out to about 400 directories and 200 RSS feeds.  I never did that with the keywords, 'clearly lethbridge' but it might be an interesting experiment if your interested.

Great post Robert & so true. I work with local business's in Lethbridge with their marketing. I had a new client tell me about Clearly Lethbridge which I never heard of before. So I checked them out for her.

Yes of course it is nicley designed which no doubt entices prospective buyers in thinking that this could be their online solution. However once you go under the hood so to speak all you have to do is take any company on that website and do a local generic search for their industry which is how real people search the internet for local products and services and good luck having them show up on that search.

I find it hilarious that you outranked them for their name Clearly Lethbridge. Which by the way brought me to your blog.

Robert I feel you are doing a real service for business people who may be researching this company here in Lethbridge.

Bootom line, listen to Robert and don't waste your money on this service.

Thanks Alan, glad you found me.

There site really intends to prey upon businesses which are not interested in being responsible for their own internet presence.  I am sure a business could turn to a professional like yourself and have their own independently branded website up and promoted for less money.

It is a great idea for Clearsky, but really it is hitting the market about 3 years too late.  Maybe I will buy the domain name for $8 when it expires.

Hi Robert,

I laughed at your reply to Bob's comment. You'll love this piece of data:

A blog can out perform YellowPages too.

I spoke with a salesperson from ClearSky two months ago. They said they were launching a site but it was not after the same market as LethbridgeMarketplace.com... well except for the fact they they are going after local businesses. :-)

You can never trust salespeople lol.

I believe the rates were $79 and $99 per MONTH.  The deluxe package included a little bit more server space, some hosted video content, etc.  At the time they launched Gold's Gym appeared to be the only client, and I believe they were some sort of contra deal or advertising swap.

$79 - $99 A MONTH? LethbridgeMarketplace.com is only $33 a month. Let's face it, these things are portals, ways to drive more traffic, and a decent online presence for those businesses without websites - they aren't solutions. That's why I only charge $33.

I think ClearSky has to build a lot of overhead in to that price.

"A deluxe package means more server space..." and they charge more for that? Server space is free! No one charges for server space. Any good webhost gives you unlimited server space and unlimited traffic.

Robert, who gave the sales presentation?
