Mirela jogging

Today I ran a 5K race at the incredibly beautiful Brookgreen Gardens.  The money raised benefited the Brookgreen Zoo, a worthy cause.   190 people participated.

When that pistol was shot (why do they still do that anyway; it causes unnecessary smoke we inhale as we go by), the runners sped across that starting line like loaded guided missiles.  The famous ones who win every race (show-offs!) did not impress me, although I must confess to a tinge of jealousy.  I mean, just why do you need to run THAT fast?

In my book, the winner of the race was a thirty some year old mother pushing a stroller with a relatively large toddler in it.  She placed in the top 10% (she beat my time).  She did it with a smile on her face and toddler still intact.

I came in second for my age group, which was no consolation for my lousy time, never mind that I shaved some years off my age...   The person I want to beat next year is the woman pushing the stroller!  Surely by then, her toddler will be old enough to...

jog!

It was called the Turkey Run, probably due to the impending holiday, or perhaps due to the many Wild Turkeys who call Brookgreen Gardens their home.

...Anyway, this turkey placed second.

You still ran the race and finished it.  Not sure that this turkey could make it to the finish line.

Doing the Turkey Run is probably a great way to counteract all of the extra calories from Thanksgiving. Congrats on the race and helping a worthy cause.

We have wild turkeys in the hills around here.  And once in while you can even see them within the City of Eugene.

I saw some running in the southwest hills the other day.  From behind.  An ugly sight.  An elephant runs with more grace. YOU wouldn't want to be associated with that Turkey Run.

And to think, Ben Franklin wanted the Turkey as our national symbol.  Can't fly. Can't run well.  Can't avoid being Thanksgiving.  Where would we be as a nation if we'd followed Ben's advice?  Eating roast Eagle next week?

Mirela,

Excellent finish.  You biggest opponent in any race is yourself and the clock.  Just beat your best time.  I use to go running with my youngest nine years ago when he was in a stroller.
