Commercial Avenue -Vancouver's Italian Quarter

Last week I had some time to spend in Vancouver - where I don't get to go often enough.  One of my favorite places is...Commercial Drive!

 commercial drive - liz moras

There's this homemade pasta shop right next to this Wall Mural - I go here to pick up these huge FAT spaghetti that my dad loves! And then I'm of to a Croatian Deli that sells all his favorite dried meats and sausages.  This is also where I get my Mom her favorite Plum butter and Rosehip Jam!

I popped by and picked up a luscious Italian torte for somebody's birthday...and some  yummy Italian cheese and bread...

Italian motorcycles at Cafe Calabria
Italian Motorcycle Club

The Italian Motorcycle Club has some of the best Italian motorcycles you'll find anywhere. You'll occasionally find this collection parked curb-side in front of Café Calabria, just south of 1st Avenue.

A similarly impressive fleet of motor scooters is often found curb-side in front of Continental Coffee, just across the street at 2nd Avenue.

Just 2 of the popular meeting spots on the Drive for Vancouver's 2-wheel motor-heads! Ducati, Moto Guzzi, Bimota, Cagiva, Laverda, Vespas - pretty impressive.

Hi Liz!  You live in THE coolest area!  I just love the 'grafitti' / muraled buildings and the cool, urban shops.  You've got some of the most interesting buildings and communities in your area.  Great Localism post!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Liz,

The wife and I will have to go there. We go to Italy often, or every couple years, but that looks like a fun weekend jaunt. I wish the border was not the hassle that it has become.

Steven -our canadian guys can be a pain - but your border guards are easy - all in all though we're looking it is relatively hassle free! Check out one of the B*B's i've got listed and make it an overnighter!

Debe -you know you're right - but why does every other place seem more exotic? :-)

I love Vancouver.  Don't think I have ever been to Commercial Drive.  My brother and sister-in-law bought a place in Whistler, so I am sure I will be coming up there one of these years.

Liz, That area looks like so much fun.  I would be sitting outside often sipping Mochachinos and people watching (and then ordering some special dessert that will clog my arteries :)

Liz,

I'm missing Italian already.

Which, now reminds me, the next person who calls me about lunch, I'm going to say "Italian".

Liz, those shops remind me of some of ours, in Little Italy; the cheese, fresh fruit and vegetable markets, and of course, the Italian cafes and bakeries.  One can never have too much Italian (... and hopefully he's good looking LOL)  Sorry, couldn't help it. :)

You're so funny Sylvie - I know i compare Chilliwack to Toronto -but Vancouver to Toronto would be a fairer comparison :-)  And I Second that! lol

Jane - I guess Little Italy's or vietnam or Chinatown -aren't all that different in the bigger cities?

Liz - what a great name for a local civic action group "MOBY" ... in our egerness to help others we sometimes forget our own backyard.

Liz, we don't have 'bring your tractor to school day' LOL - so I think Vancouver may be a better comparison ... but I'll have to wait to see it myself, and then I'll let you know.

And on that note ... off to bed.  Goodnight. I hope you're well.

I love those wall murals. And the front of that restaurant looks so inviting! When I was in Windsor, Ontario a few years ago, I found several wall murals there too. Is that something that's common throughout the whole country?

Lisa - I love them - so many communties have them - I took a pic of one in Austin/Texas when I was there......it would be neat to do a book on the wall murals of america!

lol....Sylvie - that 'bring your tractor to school day' is SO Rachel - she should be a stand up!

Gary - I missed the one in Dallas - but I saw the one in Austin!

Carole - something makes me think that you could have a bushel of sweets and you'd still be fine!

Hey - Bill hi there! We haven't chatted in a while!

Fred - I don't come in that often so yes! :-)-

Jane - oh wow!  What about for the Olympics?  Do they live there or just a get-a-way....?

Nice pictures of the Italian area.  I have many memories of Commercial Drive as the first time I moved to Vancouver was very close to there.  Great food shopping!
