Carlsbad, California is a popular place to live in North County San Diego. The residents who live there, and the continued growth, are testimony to this town's desirability as a West Coast destination in Southern California. Located about 30 miles north of downtown San Diego along the coast, Carlsbad real estate is some of the southern coast's most affordable, except for Oceanside to the north. This community of 95,000 residents occupies an area of about 40.8 square miles, making it one of the least dense communities along the coast, with lots of open space and multiple community parks. There are a wide range of neighborhoods to explore and each offers a different feel and amenities (for example La Costa, Rancho Carrillo, Aviara and Calavera Hills - more neighborhoods are listed below)
So if you are considering buying a home in Carlsbad, or relocating from another part of the country, Carlsbad offers you a wonderful life style and sense of community.
********Here are 12 things to like about living here:********** ARTS - Carlsbad has a terrific arts program, managed and funded by Friends of the art. This includes the Cannon Art Gallery, the Musuem of Making Music, and the summer concert series, TGIF Jazz in the Parks (10 free concerts in 2007 in 4 of Carlsbad's nicest parks, open to all) on successive Fridays from June 22 through August 24. SCHOOLS - the schools in Carlsbad have an excellent reputation at all levels and have won awards repeatedly. WEATHER - well, what can we say. San Diego has some fabulous weather. Even with May Gray and June Gloom (see the recent San Diego Magazine for a discussion of this phenomenon). It is rare to get warmer than 75-80 near the coast and nights are always cool and great sleeping weather. You can enjoy the outdoors all year round.
BEACHES - they are terrific. One can go on forever about the beaches - they are beautiful, easily accessible, and offer a wide range of views and activities. Carlsbad beaches have been voted some of the best around, but then lots of San Diego beaches are terrific - great for surfing, sunset-watching, sun bathing, swimming or just walking. SMART GROWTH - Carlsbad has a well-defined smart growth plan and has been carefully managing its housing growth for years (e.g., the master planned communities still being developed), with projection for years to come. Intelligent use of our space, and providing for the continuing population growth is essential, and Carlsbad is a leader in this regard.
CONCERN FOR THE ENVIRONMENT - preservation of open space ties in with Carlsbad's Smart Growth plan. The city has enacted ordinances to preserve sensitive wildlife habitats, some of the first such regulations in California.
GOLF - well with weather as we have it, this is a great place to golf all year. And there are some terrific places to do so...La Costa Spa and Resort, Four Seasons Aviara Resort, Rancho Carlsbad and the The Crossings at Carlsbad (the newest, and public, golf course set to open in August 2007). PROXIMITY TO SAN DIEGO AND LOS ANGELES - what could be better than living in a coastal suburban community with lots of amenities, yet also having easy access to 2 great cities. San Diego is 30-45 minutes, LA only about 2 hours. A TERRIFIC RETIREMENT COMMUNITY - yes, part of that is the weather and the overall quality of life, but there are a number of 55+ communities (one, Rancho Carlsbad, with a golf course) and a myriad of activities. Carlsbad Village has an excellent Seniors Community Center with lots of activities. The city also has independent living facilities plus communities offering assisted living, skilled nursing, and Alzheimer's care. HOUSING - there is a diversity of housing available, in most price ranges, styles and sizes. Condo, townhomes, detached property, estates, waterfront property, vacation rentals, apartments, affordable housing. Carlsbad may well be one of the most affordable communities on the coast south of Los Angeles except for Oceanside. While these prices may not compare to the Midwest, you can find 20 homes right now (both detached and attached, with some in 55+ communities) for under $300K. Market reports for Carlsbad and other communities can be found below. TRANSPORTATION - there is the freeway (the 5) passing through, Palomar Airport for commuter and private planes and helicopter services, the Coaster (a commuter train running from San Diego to Oceanside) with 2 stops, and a good bus system; Amtrak trains heading north and south stop in nearby Oceanside. Yes, there is traffic but that is true everywhere along the coast. The Coast Highway (Route 101) provides a beautiful way to get where you are going while enjoying fabulous views of the Carlsbad coastline at the edge of the continent.
SPAS - for some, having a great spa nearby is essential to their being, and Carlsbad is blessed with two world-class spas - La Costa and the Four Seasons - along with a good number of small day spas. You can also enjoy a wide range of services (health and wellness, spa treatments, yoga) at the Chopra Center at the la Costa Spa and Resort. There you have it - my list of the top reasons to love Carlsbad and why you should live here. If you need more information, just let me know. I'm a big fan and I live here too.
