Downtown Los Angeles at night is a hidden treasure that most Angelenos have yet to discover. Swimming Pool

Tonight I visited the Checkers Hotel with its rooftop swimming pool.  The Checkers, now Hilton Checkers, is a historic hotel dating back to 1926. It is the only 4-diamond boutique hotel in Downtown L.A.  The view from the rooftop is stunning at night and I am sorry I am not a better photographer to have captured it.

LibraryThe art deco building in front is The Los Angeles Central Library, the third largest in the nation, and probably the most beautiful. It was built to resemble ancient Egyptian architecture and the central tower has a tiled mosaic pyramid.

Pershing Square, in front of the historic Biltmore Hotel, is now the site of  an outdoor skating rink - yes, skating in Los Angeles. This will be open until January 18th.  For more information visit the L.A. Parks site.

I get to California once in a while since some of my husband's family is still there.  I've gotten as far north of San Diego as Murrietta *where one of my high school friends lives, but never made it to LA.  Am really going to have to make it next time I'm out there.  Ice skating?  I love it.

Tammy, there are so many parts of L.A. that people have never seen.  Downtown is a whole other world.  Hope you make it one day.  It is not so far from San Diego.

Haris, next take make sure you do Downtown.  You haven't seen L.A. otherwise.

Jane: I hope you are starting a series, here because I love learning about these hiden treasures. So many cities in the U.S. share the same kind of historic riches, but unless someone like you brings them to our attention, how do we know aout them?

Well if you are coming here, Melinda, be sure to give me a call :)

Janice, I think I willl, actually.  Honestly, so many people, even in Los Angeles itself, don't know about downtown.  It is so rich in history.  Thanks for your kind comments.

Hi Jane,  It's so interesting to read about different places to visit.  I never would have thought about  ice skating in L.A. - learn something new everyday!

Maybe next time we drive out we will get up there.  Usually our trips are planned around family events... weddings, graduations, funerals... we need to have just a "visit" that would allow for some exploring.

Tammy,  there is certainly a lot to see.  Not the easiest city to get around, but very, very interesting.

Jane, the Checkers Hotel rooftop pool reminds me of the one I saw in a Sex and the City episode...very cool and chic...and those rooftop views must have been quite dazzling IRL! :)

Hey, I think they did come to L.A., Leilani.  However, I think I know where that was and it wasn't downtown.  It was on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood.
