My Dogs Won't Even Eat Meat from Walmart...

By
Real Estate Agent with Jennifer Allan, Inc.

Let me state for the record that I love Walmart. I really really do. I pretty much figure that if Walmart doesn't have it, I don't need it.

Except for their meat. Due to some pesky food allergies, I'm an extremely fussy eater. No processed food, no additives, no preservatives... basically no junk. And I've heard that Walmart meat is full of junk. So I don't eat it.

Well, the other day I was at my favorite store and remembered that I needed some dog food. My dogs are on a BARF diet ("bones and raw food"), so I picked up some chicken wings for them.

Lo and behold... my dogs wouldn't eat them. Ziggers laid her wing down on the floor and looked puzzled. I picked up the wing and gave it to her again. She tried to please me by walking around with it in her mouth for a minute or two, but as soon as she was out of my sight, she set it down again. And walked away. From raw meat.

AHA! I suddenly remembered another time I'd fed them Walmart chicken wings with a slightly different result - as soon as the wings went down, they, well, came back up. Now, my dogs love chicken wings - they eat them all the time and the ones from the Piggly Wiggly or Winn Dixie go down and stay down.

But not from Walmart.

So, from here on out... we shall buy our chicken wings elsewhere...

I thought chicken bones were bad for dogs.  I don't give my dogs bones I'm afraid they will get stuck in their throats.

This is a funny story though.

Angelia - BARF proponents (and I'm one) say that it's cooked bones that will hurt a dog. Raw bones are actually very soft and completely digestible. My dogs eat chicken, pork, deer and turkey bones every day and they are incredibly healthy!

Our dog eat too fast.  I believe she would choke on chicken bones.  So don't give them to her.

That's funny about your dog knowing the difference of where you buy the chicken.....

Very funny story!  And I've always given my dogs chicken bones too -- but from the table leftovers.

This is interesting, Jennifer.  I also thought that chicken bones were bad because they splinter and can perforate the digestive tract lining.

Sharon - they say that raw bones don't splinter - and as far as I can tell, they don't. Dogs have a much more acidic digestive tract than we do - they can handle bones as long as they aren't cooked.

Mark - my dogs gobble their food too and every once in awhile it comes back up. But when they were on kibble, they bloated like crazy, so this seems much safer. I also feed them ground up BARF (not nearly as gross as that sounds!) which has bones, but they're tiny.

Funny Story....makes me wonder what Wal Mart does to their chicken wings.  Maybe they process them difrently.  Hey maybe the money they could be using for health insurance and fair wages for their employees is being spent on Barfy Chicken Wings.  LOL

I don't think you should give dogs cooked bones - raw bones are entirely different - but please, no cooked bones.

Rick - My dogs are the same way with some food - specifically their morning 'nana. Put the banana in their bowl and they're not interested... they'd jump & catch.

Lisa - exactly. My dogs get raw bones ... unless they steal the cooked ones out of the trash...

Michael - I googled it, of course, and found lots of stuff about "what they do" to their meat. I have a very sensitive tummy, and on the rare occasions I've eaten it, I definitely don't feel right afterwards...

Robert - They were trained by the best!

Not just an introvert, but a meat snob too!  :)

I have never fed my dog raw meat, I wonder if she would eve do with it. I have handed her a bone on occasion and she doesnt seem to know what to do with it.... and will look at you with that inquisitive look that says "HEY, what about the meat?"

More opinions than you want to hear about.

Chickens are what they eat, and there's a lot of difference between chicken food and chicken food.  If you insist on feeding barf, my suggestion is to choose the source carefully.  My preference is for a commercially produced organic dog food, and not from a toothpaste, soap, or candy company.
