How do you know the BEST place to post a Blog entry?

Okay, so I'm still relatively new here. I've toured around, found a few groups, made a few friends, and even got past the intimidation to start blogging a few posts. I kinda hang out with the home stagers and photographers . . . need I explain? And I've met lots of super people through those groups.

However, when I read some featured posts, or "comment reciprocate" with those who have taken the time to do the same on my blog posts, I keep discovering a multitude of places and people and dimensions here on ActiveRain. There is so much here--it goes way beyond the "onion" metaphor!

I have a bunch of blogging ideas, but because my mind wanders ;-), they aren't always applicable to the staging & photography groups that I know of.

So I ask you more experienced ActiveRain-ers . . . how do you know where to post a blog entry? I have kind of experimented with "Channels", but it seems to me you can just make up any ol' category. But how do you know if anyone will ever find it?! I always pick a "category", too, but have no idea what the heck this is or where they are.

Thanks for taking the time to help a self-taught AR hack! Oh, and thanks for the inspiration, too.

(PS  I tried sticking a piece of clipart in here from Microsoft Office, but couldn't get it to work! I'm not a newbie when it comes to images, but alas, I couldn't find a Save As option, and other hiccups.)

Looks like you're off to a pretty decent start.  I would recommend finding a few individual blogs that interest you, even from a different field, based on writing style or general themes and add them as an associate.  Trade some comments on each other's blogs back and forth and you might find yourself getting referrals or at least more exposure.

Cheers,

Brian

Deena, Just blog from the heart, Put it where it seems right and where your target is.  Post to groups is usually a good idea as well since some of the groups are very active.

Most of the time I blog to other groups I belong to that are germain to the subject matter.  After a while, because so many of my posts accumulate there, I switch things around and post to a group I've never contributed to before.  Most importantly, because of my somewhat unique market in Honolulu, Hawaii, I use the Local/Regionalism channel consistently.

There are literally a gillion options on where and how to post. Localism is a must. Post to really specific areas of your market where you work or want to work.

Channels and topics are hugely important. This is how the right hand column of your outside blog indexes your posts. That's why making up your own topics is cool.

Categories are on the AR page and I don't really have a strategy there yet/ After 6 months I still have something to learn.

I hope that helps a little!

Hi Douglas and Rich! Thanks for some good ideas. Yes, I agree it's good to mix it up and find some new groups for your content. Some groups are more active than others and it probably gets boring to see the same person dominate with their content.

Okay, so I guess I've been using the Channels "correctly" so far? Thanks!

Hi Deena, I agree with an earlier post "blog from the heart" that makes it more fun. Otherwise the writing becomes too mechanical.  Keep it fun.

 I love the picture...  terrific!

Hi Deena ~ Somebody had a really good post the other day about Channels.  If you look at them from the front page you can see which are the top channels that are linked to from the front page - not a bad Channel to choose.

I almost always post to the Professional channel - and I just use the first one - I think at one time it was structured to be a more meaningful way to categorize than it is now - rather than the Consumer unless my post is geared to consumers.

I don't always post to groups - in fact lately do so infrequently - and I don't spend much time in groups. But it can be a good way to get your post more exposure. I think you can include a post in a maximum of five groups.

Thanks for your feedback, Thomas and Liz. Yes, I just entered a new blog post that was straight from the heart!

Liz, I have seen those Channels on the front page. Good tip to post to the ones with immediate links.

I found you in a new group I just signed up with so it makes sense you are doing a lot of the right things. I'm heading out to a live networking event on social media tonight that hopefully will give me more insight into blogging AND I hope to make some good contacts for my business!

Deena,

Everyone has given good advice, choices, and options already in your comments.  You are doing a great job and with writing talent like yours working, you will find just the right combination on where to post it.

Deena - As a newbie myself, I've found groups by following my favorite writer's postings to see what the other writers are like. After a while, you will build a list of groups that reflect your own writing style. Once in a while, I will venture into a group just out of curiousity and I'll discover a whole new style of writers. It's quite an aventure!
