Ripped from the recent headlines, comes a report (out of Montreal) that a women on sick leave had her benefits cut due to some facebook pictures. It seems as a way of fighting her depression, this Canadian women visited a Chippendales show (while on Holiday)...upon viewing these her insurance provider denied coverage. The Women's Attorney has argued her benefits were wrongfully dismissed, without "the proper medical recommendation". The women's legal council further explained the depressed women's doctor had suggested she take a vacation somewhere sunny.

In an unrelated story, during a marriage counseling session an estranged husband was quoted as saying "I've know this women all my life we were meant to be soul-mates" to which the wife going through this difficult separation said "you went to high school with this women and haven't seen her in 30 years...soul-mate my ass".

Let these stories serve as a warning to all you fans of Facebook and other social media's: be careful what you post...these digital recordings are out in the public domain (forever).

...P.S.  I just got back from vacation (and I'm not collecting any sick leave...we Realtors are never sick) and I'm a happily married man (no high school sweethearts are about to steal me away)...feel free to sign up to my facebook fan page or linked in blogs.

Gary...As an independent contractor for the past 26 years, I have found it comical when salaried people I know talk about "taking a sick day"...with me its more like giving up production for a sickness...so we are not allowed to be unwell. The new health care reform be a self employed contractor and never get sick again.

Steve, How true, how true.....As I was once adviced, never put out there something your grandmother couldn't read or you wouldn't mind seeing on the cover of the Wall street Journal!!  The return of the High School Flame is nothing more than a silly fantasy that middle aged people get caught up in when life wasn't what they expected.  Get over it!!  Is life ever what we expect, deal with it and love life, it's all in the attitude.  Thanks my friend, a reality check for many.  Have a GREAT DAY!!

PS  I never heard of a sick day....what is it? ! :)

Debbie...most of us are always looking for a way to make a magazine cover, but probably not the way these two stories unfolded.

Its not the first time I've heard of insurance being denied because of photos of vacations. I really don't feel to sorry for these people because I'm working hard and paying a lot of money for insurance because of people who commit fraud.

Todd, I'm with you my friend. If you are well enough for a vacation you are well enough to be working.

It amazes me what some people will post on Facebook.  I don't understand how they can be so stupid as to not realize it can come back and haunt them later.

Hello Steve, Thanks for your sharing. A good lesson can be learned from the carpenter, they measures twice and cuts once.  If the sender would read their posts twice they might realize pushing send may not be a good idea.

Great post. Thanks for illustrating that any time you're communicating online, whether it's on Facebook, here on ActiveRain, or just through an email, you have to understand everything you write can and likely will be read by unintended audience. If you don't want the world to read it, don't write it.

It's amazing how so many different agencies and companies use Facebook as a research tool. I know that when you are trying to become a citizen of another country, your facebook page can be used as a reason for rejection.  There have also been numerous employees that have been let go due to items on their facebook page or even using facebook at work. Employers also use facebook to look up potential employees. Be careful what you post!

Casey & Jennifer, The world runs on information both good and bad...putting stuff out on the Web that can be an issue later is not smart...not smart at all.
