I was talking to my I.T. guy the other day and we were talking about a detached storage device that I have and connecting that to our file server so that we don't have to store all of the lovely photos we have collected on our hard drive and main file server, eating up precious memory space! What he said, really impacted me and I think I will enjoy vacation even more this upcoming week!
SO we were talking about WHEN he was going to do this, and he said "what about the 4th of July?" and I said "NO, Dennis, you are NOT going to working on MY computer on a holiday, you need to spend that time with your family!". His reply was "No, Katrina, I'll be just sitting around home really bored, and that's why I like to come to your house and see your little ones..." I said "what do you mean" he said "Katrina your kids are small they are at the age where they NEED you, love you and want you! My kids are teenagers and I really miss them being that small where they NEEDED me and wanted to me around me".
So had to ask MORE profound questions of coarse see what what he meant by "I will be bored". SO he proceeds to tell me "NO you don't get it, my teenagers hang at their friends house and they don't want to hang out with me anymore, and Mary she's a couch potato, she just wants to hang out at home, and I want to go do things... like go to the beach, or a movie, or wonder around and DO SOMETHING!"
So he made me think MORE about the beauty of my small, needy children, that I had a momentary thought ... they were bothering or interupting me, then I realized, THIS IS LIFE! THIS is Why I DO what I do! They are not BOTHERING me, they are merely trying to get my attention!
With my (might as well be mine) Son Tyler that's 13, Madalynne is now 7, Nicholas is 4, and Adaleesa (aka BOO) is now 16 months, right by my side during the day grabbing at my attention, well NOT the 13 year old, he's now interested in girls, and MOM is NOT one of those girls! SO I can clearly see what he is talking about especially when my 7 year old is now starting similar charateristics!
So I thought I would share with you all the beauty of my little baby wanting a drink, and grabbing with the hands to get my attention and tell me what she wants!
Enjoy your family! Enjoy life! Enjoy those special times you'll NEVER get back and cherrish the moment! Take a WELL DESERVED VACATION, and your priceless recovery time!
I am SO blessed to enjoy a fabulous husband (almost 10 years of marriage) and 4 fantastic children!
Katrina, you've got your head where it needs to be. Great perspective. It's far too easy for us to forget how precious those moments are and how quickly they disappear. Career is great, but not at the expense of relationships with our families. Balance is the key and it sounds like you've found it. Great post!
Blue Ridge Scott & Jack, thanks for reading my post and your comments!
Ryan, I am STILL searching for that balance everyday but I have to remind myself and others why I do what I do (why we do what we do). It's amazing in this fast paced technological world how easily we can loose site of this!
The next best thing is the fact that I have WONDERFUL clients that totally RESPECT my family time (Sundays off) and my vacations with my family!
This is a great post. I would like to add that whatever ages our children are, we still need to take time for ourselves. Our youngest is 28. Everybody has their own family. Now, if we can ever make the time, we can do things like go camping or paint or whatever. The problem, of course, is that it is so easy to work constantly in this business if you don't set boundaries on your time that we still never get around to doing any of those things.
So far, my first goal has been health and taking time to get to the gym every other day. So far, so good.
Katrina, take it from someone who knows. My children are 16 and 13 and are more interested in their "social life" than "family life" . My son will be a Junior in high school and is starting to talk about college and what he wants to do with his life. Where did all the years go?
We bought a 2nd home on a lake in Wisconsin. We have spent weekends up there as a family and it has been wonderful. We reconnect, go boating, play board games and just talk. There really isn't TV and my kid's cell phones don't work so there aren't any distractions!!! It takes them a day or two to get used to being disconnected from all their technology(LOL), but once they do it is awesome!
Love'm Little!! I agree...this is the time when you can love all over them and they love you back!!
PS...Diaper butts RULE!!!
PSS...I hope you really do NO WORK on July 4th!! We will be spending it with friends and family...I can't wait! Thanks for the reminder, we all need it sometimes!
Great post! That time out of the business with the kids is some of the best... Don't forget the alone vactions with the other half of your home team!! Family is why we work, so we can get back to them as fast as possible - not a get away from them as much as possible. Thanks for the inspiring words!
