Trends - You Can Follow Them - Or You Can Buck Them

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Real Estate Centre Inc., Brokerage

Paint colour, fashion, furniture, hairstyles, toys, electronics, vacations, restaurants, you name it, they all follow trends.

Trends usually have an expiry date. They come and go with time. The word trendy often conjures up large dollar signs $$$$.  Look at runway fashions.  Would you buy something from a high end fashion house if you could afford it? Or would you look for a moderately priced knockoff from a department store?

When your child wants that hyped up  toy of the season for Christmas, do you phone every store in town, or drive miles looking for it when it's out of stock? Think Cabbage Patch Dolls & Furbies.

What kind of furniture do you like to buy?  Do you go for comfort or style? Reasonably priced black leather sectional?  Or tres chic red tufted velvet?  Maybe lower priced disposable furniture from Ikea?  Just remember you can't move if your house is full of Ikea furniture.  Once you take it apart you will never be able to put it back together agan.

Look at paint colours.  They come, they go, they come back again.  Remember peach and hunter green?

And then there are the trendy restaurants.  Sushi anyone?  Why is it that at the higher end restaurants you pay more money and get less food?  I believe it's called Nouvelle Cuisine.  Tapas restaurants are big here now.  Sharing is good.

Have you done the Spa vacation yet?  What ever happened to Disney cruises?  Of course we now have the Staycation. The "Afro" hairstyle has returned only to be called the "Fro" this time around.  And then there's Amy Winehouse and her "beehive."

Today there are magazines and television shows  that teach us how to dress and decorate in high style on a lower budget. Years ago some people bought furniture and kept the plastic covering on to extend the life expectancy.  Please don't tell me you know anyone today who still covers their furniture.

Trends and styles will keep changing over time.   I've painted furniture, stripped it, antiqued it, and then started all over again. I've sold or thrown away antique furniture only to regret it now that I'm older and wiser and compare the quality to today's standards.

Remember styles are cyclical, trends don't usually have a long shelf live and  "Everything old is new again"

Jenny, I can't believe that hairdo!  I still have some IKEA furniture that I bought over 20 years ago in Europe, I put it together myself and have taken it apart and put togehter several time since then everytime we moved.  Just call me if you need help! lol   Have a great Thanksgiving!

Just bought  a 1992 Chevy for $1500. Just under 50,000 miles. Great condition. I cannot take clients out in it since it does not make me look prosperous and I am too sensitive to the possible negativity...but at night I cruise picking up signs and lockboxes, feeling thrifty and 17 years younger, listening to country music and figuratively throwing beer cans out the window at the stop signs...so much wasted youth...there is much freedom of expression once you are past 40.

Hi Banana girl - Yup that's a Furby.  Mechanical dogs?  How about those dogs that people used to put in the back windows of their car?  The ones with the necks that bobbled up and down?

Hi Sylvie - That is so funny.  I can just picture you ripping at the lampshade and the people standing there with their mouths wide open.  Are we supposed to dust the lampshades lol???

Hi Gerry, I know a lot of my colleagues have a problem with change.  We put in a new mls system last year.  Yikes.  All of a sudden the old faulty system without bells and whistles was the best thing since sliced bread to some.

Hi Diane -That must have been a great Christmas.  All those noisy Furbies talking at once.  You're right media plays a big part in what's hot and what's not

Hi Mary - I knew there had to be some of those plastic wrapped seats still out there.  Luckily I haven't seen any for awhile.  I go through decorating style phases but it's not every year or so.  Probably closer to 10.

I think if you stay with the classics you're doing well.

Hahaha Linda - I don't think white cabinets ever go out of style.  That's what we have in our kitchen.  I just changed the knobs to copper and they look great.

Hi Ty - You're only as old as you feel, right?  And it sounds like you're feeling good.

Hi Douglas - Well I haven't been to Hawaii but it sounds like I've been in the same condos as you.  Just when people have just finished stripping all that wallpaper, indeed it is back in style.  But please, no more borders!!!

Hi Silvia - I guess they don't make Ikea furniture like they used to lol.  I give you credit.  I hate anything that needs directions.

Okay Kathy it will be our little secret.

Hi Steve - I think you have a post in there somewhere.  Sounds like a great deal for such low mileage.  My new car has XM radio and turn on Margaritaville and pretend I'm on a beach somewhere.  One can dream.

Eeewww Fred - That was the problem with shag, anything and everything hid in it.  Oh darn, I was looking forward to those bell bottom photos.  Keep looking.

OMG David, that was too funny.  You mean Lady Gag Gag?  Joking.  She is selling a ton of records.

Diane - The house we bought had green countertops from the 90's and green and white tile backsplash.  They are gone gone gone now.

Yes, I remember my big curly "hair" and mauve and light blue bedroom.  Ugh.  What will I think 10 years from now about my flat, straight hair.  Thanks for your perspective!

What an observant post!  I really enjoyed it.  Now, how about this - dated RED ACCENT WALLS and that garish, globby sponge (faux-faux) painting that looks more like wall stains than a texture...Wonder when granite/stainless steel will be out of "style?"  Yikes!    We humans are sure strange creatures sometimes.

I read a while back that if you remember something the first time it was in style, you probably shouldn't wear it when it becomes "in style" again.

I kept that in mind with hip-huggers and wide-leg pants.  (although our hip-huggers stayed at the hips, pretty much....the last trip thru they were more directionally challenged.)  I'm glad that trend seems to have waned.
