What's in your wallet?

Picture of a WalletThis morning a colleague of mine came into my office with an extremely sullen face. She had her wallet stolen while grocery shopping for her Thanksgiving Feast at a local supermarket. Obviously, unable to purchase her groceries, she sprinted home to start calling her credit card companies and such.

Several questions raced through her mind on the drive home, "How would she know who to call? What cards were in her wallet? How was she going to find the phone numbers for the credit card companies that she could remember?"

Then it dawned on her...several months ago a friend had been through a similar situation in which his wallet was stolen. Based on his experience he suggested that she make a copy of all of the items in her wallet. This way if she were ever so unfortunate to misplace/lose it - she would know exactly what companies to call to cancel cards and freeze accounts. In addition, the phone numbers of the creditors are typically on the back side of the card.

I just made a copy of my wallet. When will you?

I guess you never think of these kinds of things until it is too late.

Something so simple yet quite obviously never thought of by most people.  Thanks for sharing Cara, this is a fantastic idea... though I admit I carry very few plastics in my wallet (not enough to forget who and what).

Another option: if you have an internet connection you can quickly find customer service numbers for CC companies.  But I do like the copy idea to save valuable time after a theft occurs.

I keep most of my card at home in the safe. Loosing them is one reason and temptation is the other. If I dont have them on me I pay cash.

Cara, I had my wallet stolen a few years ago and learned this valuable lesson.  Thanks for sharing this wonderful idea with everyone.  Let me add to it...Do Not carry your social security card in your wallet.  Keep it at home in a safe place (it can cause the most damage in the hands of the wrong person).

Cara,

I only carry one card in my wallet.  My debit.  It keeps me out of debt and simplifies things should I lose it.

Cara:  Outstanding advice.  Trying to remember what cards are in my wallet right now is tough enough, never mind the huge stress that would accompany it being stolen.  Making copies is a great idea.
