Notice that I've used the word "compound" instead of "home" because homes of the rich today often include additional buildings (as opposed to former wings of buildings) for guests and staff.

The largest that I know of is 110,000 sq ft, which is a 29 bedroom mansion on Long Island built by Ira Rennert, an industrialist, in 1998.

The neighbors sued the town of Southhampton, but lost. The property was deemed to be a residence, albeit a huge one.

Sharon, I'd sure like to see that place!  29 BEDROOMS?  I wonder who owns it...The Hamptons are amazing, I don't get there often enough (because of the traffic) but I don't think you can get down to Dune Road anymore, if it's left.  I think it's been washed away.  What a view from there!  It's the one place I haven't been to this summer yet and you can tell it's my next outing :)  Thanks for a great post!

I would get lost in a house that had 29 bedrooms.  Sounds more like a small hotel to me!  Definately sized more like a large hotel....They must have staff to wait upon the staff!!!

Chris - I've read that Mukesh Ambani, who is building the 27 story residence, has 600 staff.
