Traveling ladies from Searcy Arkansas with fashion notes.

Two more pictures contributed by my blogging buddy, Anita Hart.  Her mother is in each of them and they were traveling.  The first picture shows the ladies in Hot Springs Arkansas in the mid 50's.  She has the identity of some of them.  Her mother, Corrine Hart, Inez Pickens (Dean of Women at Harding College), Margurrite O'Bannion (Exec. Secretary to Dr. George Benson), Myrtle Roberson (owner of the Rendezvous Restaurant), and an unknown lady with the long fur tails.

Searcy ladies in Hot Springs

The long furs were so popular then.  I think the more furs you had, and they still had the heads on them, the more money you had.

Personally, I never had any fox or fur heads and tails.

They definitely had to have on high heels (but not as high as today's!) hats and gloves and the little purses that matched the shoes.

That was during a time when fashion dictated the length of the dress.  It appears that fashion said to have the skirt about mid-calf and these ladies, who loved to be fashionable, followed to the inch!

The next picture finds girls at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis TN.  They are actually on top of the Peabody.  That's where the famous Peabody ducks live.

For those who have never heard of the Peabody, it is famous for the ducks who march into the lobby to spend the day swimming in the fountain and basking in the love and adoration of the guests at the hotel.  At the end of the day they march back up to their home on the roof.

A red carpet is laid down for the little ducks to walk on.

They again have on their hats and probably gloves are somewhere present.  Two-toned pumps must have been in style.  No doubt the purses matched the shoes.  Corinne Hart, our famous one, is second from our right.  Looks like slightly askew hats may have been the rage!

I'm so happy that we don't have to wear white gloves anymore or, for that matter, even pantyhose. Maybe the 2-tone shoes were a result of the popularity of saddle shoes for kids? Remember them? I remember my first and only pair of saddle shoes, LOL.

Hope your 41st turkey turned out well, Barbara.

How times have changed. Hats, gloves, etc. Interesting first photo with the old Sears & Roebuck sign in the background. Thanks for the stroll through the past.

I once danced on the roof of the Peabody Hotel in Memphis to Clyde McCoy and his band. Clyde's signature tune was "Sugar Blues", played on his trumpet.    I think Mother has an autograph of Jan Garber who she probably heard also at the Peabody.  Little Rock didn't have a place like the Peabody to go dining and dancing, so lots of Searcians went to Memphis in those good old days.

Barbara, Mother will be spinning in her grave if you don't start spelling her name right:  She is CORINNE, not CORRINE.  Never made any difference to me, but it sure did to her.

Thanks for sharing. The askew hats may be due as much to the potency of the Peabody libations as to the current fashions. ; )

Liz, my turkey (41st or something like that) was terrible, in my opinion.  Others said it was good.  I told them at the dinner that I was retiring as the turkey queen and they could decide who gets to cook those birds for the next 40!  Yep, panty hose and girdles and gloves and shirts of the same length are things we will not miss.  Will we ever get rid of purses, though!!

Ed, strolling through the past is a lot better than living it was!  Agreed?

Anita, every time I start to type her name, I question my spelling.  I need a memory trick.  Rodger's mother was similar in that she wanted to be Wyndelene, not Winnie.  I'll work on it.

Bob, that's funny!  You can't say that about those ladies!!!!  Corinne (got it right?) will flip in her grave!!

I apologize.....I think that came on stronger than I intended.  AND....in the above blog, you spelled her name twice:  once Corrine and then Corinne.  Forgive me, and spell it any way it comes out.

Anita, by it hereby resolved that I have written on a secret spot how to spell Corinne.  Thereby I should not spell it wrong again.

Dear Mrs Godmother to Nutsy,

Is that the same famous George Benson who sang "On Broadway"? If so I think I would like to connect with him.

Dear Wheatloaf,

I know you're a fantastic singer and if you're a s nice as Nutsy I may be able to get you a special engagement in Searcy.  That Mr. Benson is a different one, I think, but how would I know for sure.

Yours truly,

Ms. Barbara

I"m thinking if this Dr. George S. Benson thought someone thought he was the person singing "On Broadway" HE would be spinning in his grave!

Anita, we've got several spinners now, don't we?  This blog could be dangerous to the health of those passed on.  LOL

Barbara, I like these looking back on Facebook. Keep on keeping on.

I think this and similar events have a message for modern living. We live so fast and furious it's hard to single out an event and

say "Ain't that grand".

That isn't the Peabody Hotel roof. I was raised in Memphis and I know it well. Plus, there never was any trees that tall around the Peabody during the past hundred years or more. I'll try to find out where the ladies were. It was likely another downtown hotel, not quite as tall as the Peabody.
