Thanksgiving... Gee, thanks

Honestly, Thanksgiving is one of my least favorite holidays.  I love the idea behind it, and can fully support being thankful for all of the wonderful things in my life... but I think that is something that we should remember daily, not just remember because there is a meal connected to it.

And about the meal...  I'd rather have Japanese...  A little sushi and some hibachi.  Steak, shrimp, fried rice and a coupel of tuna rols with wasabi...  Or maybe a juicy steak...  Southwestern Pasta with chicken?

Turkey, dressing, cranberry (canberry?) sauce, pecan pie, pumpkin pie...  I don't care.  In fact, one of the best Thanksgivings ever for me involved pizza.

A few guys I worked with that were single, or single for the weekend with family out of town, all got together and ordered pizza.  We watched a few movies, played some video games and just hung out.  For that day, we were family. We cracked jokes about ourselves and our spousal equivalents...

Another of my best Thanksgivings was with my grandmother after she got to the point of not wanting to cook.  We got a big bucket from the Colonel the day before and just heated everything up.  Prep took about 20 minutes and clean-up about 5.  The rest oft he time was about the family.  We mostly just hung out and enjoyed each other's company.  My grandmother told embarrassing stories about ancestors...

The point is...

This isn't a day about food...  That is just a distraction.  It isn't even a day about "thanks"... we should do that every day.  It is a day about being with people we care about and enjoying the time we have together.

I walked with my boys a few miles this morning.  My wife went to a movie with her mother.  Then we all got together and played and laughed and "were here"...

Happy Thanksgiving.  Don't stress about the bird.  If it caught fire and smoked everyone out of the house, it will make a great story in a few years...

I loved your story...and no matter how hard you 'appear' you're actually a caring kind of guy.... Thanksgiving happened this past Sunday...my husband felt like cooking while I was doing an Open House....My son drove over (while I was still out) and picked up dinner for he and gramma.

Today was just time for US.   We went to breakfast and went to see Twilight..new moon. Yup...it was a great day.

You're right Lane...it's about time spent....with people we love...and should be thankful every day...which I am....maybe blogging about giving thanks was just a way to voice what I'm appreciative of...even though I feel it every day.

In any case...you had a wonderful day...because it was Thanksgiving :)

Great post Lane.  You are right.  It is always about being grateful for each day of our lives, and those we love. We are truly blessed and that is priceless.    Happy Thanksgiving to you and all your loved ones.

Amen and Amen!

I slept in and awoke to the smell of bacon cooking and coffee brewing.

As I came down the stairs the smell was more and more delicdious.  I found my husband cooking breakfast about nine-ish.  We had a meal together, played some, and about 3PM microwaved some Sweet and Sour Chicken Rice,,,,, sat down and enjoyed it.

Our oldest daughter came by with her hubby and our 14 year old granddaughter.  We visited for a while.  How thankfule am I?

Loads!!!  And God is blessing our lives with hugs and friends.  To Him be the thanks.

To each his own.  We do the big meal, but that is the excuse to get everyone together.  I have 5 boys and if it was just the immediate family (7 of us) it would seem small and disappointing.  This year we did go small with 13 people.  You are right about it being about spending time with people.

When I started reading I was freaked a little, but as I went along I realized you really do love Thanksgiving... just not the commercial version.  In my family we don't even do it on the right day.  My brother works in the food industry and bakes 100s of those dang birds the night before so we have one of our annual get togethers the Wednesday before thanksgiving.  I really do try to be thankful all the time, but I'm also very happy to get to eat my mom's cornbread dressing at least twice every single year.  And my cranberries do not come from a can.  I suppose the food part of it is important in my family because we really enjoy all getting in the kitchen and cooking together.  It's part of our tradition.  This year on the actual day... my husband took me to a movie.  That was fabulous too.  Can't wait to hear how you feel about Christmas.

Sally - Don't tell anyone, you'll ruin my rep...

Jim - Thanks.

Jean - That sounds like a breakfast I could get behind...

Gene - Had a fabulous Thanksgiving one year with about 25 friends.  They are all "Holiday Orphans" and we invited them to be family that year.  Their families weren't around where we were.  That is kind of fun.

Tammy - I like freaking people out a little...
