Fun Daytrips From Houston!

Real Estate Agent with Century 21 Hardee-Team Realty

One of my favorite daytrips from Houston, is to Austin Texas.  One of the best parks in Austin is Zilker Botanical Garden, and the annual Orchid Show they sponser is usually around second week of April.  These are pictures from my trip there in 2008.  On the way the to park, I saw this wonderful train.   The shape of the front of the engine is extremely unusual.

The Japanese Garden section of Zilker Botanical Garden has many interesting features, including the koi ponds with the stepping stones, the tea house and the stone and wood bridges.

The three pictures below are some orchids from the Orchid Show in 2008.

Orchid #2

Isn't this one adorable?  The color is wonderful shades of purple and pink and the pattern is exquisite.  It almost looks like it was painted or airbrushed on.

Orchids #3

I don't think I'd ever seen ones like this before.

Orchids #4

These yellow and orange orchids took first place.

Zilker Park Butterfly

There are lovely hiking trails in Zilker Botanical Garden.  Here is an example of one of the cute chairs that are actually butterfly sculptures -- they are a wonderful place to take pictures of your friends or family members.

Zilker Park #2

Above is one of the wonderful sculptures from the Prehistoric Garden.  This section of the park was constructed about 5 years ago.

For more information about the park go to:, their phone number is (512)477-8672 and the address is 2200 Barton Springs Rd, Austin, TX.  It is a great place for an afternoon with your loved ones.

I have a picture of me sitting in that butterfly chair at Zilker, but it's a real picture on film that had to be developed, so I haven't a clue where it is.

And now, since you have a picture of a locomotive, I turn my comment over to Russel Ray, marketing guru, home inspector, Beatles specialist, and railroad fanatic:

Hey, Liz - That's an ALCO RSD-15 engine.

You can see many more pictures, including another picture of Austin and Texas Central #442 at this site:

And you can find more pictures of #442 over here:

Seventy-five RSD-15 units were built by American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in Schenectady, New York, between 1956 and 1960. It had 2,400 horsepower with a top speed of 65 mph. There are only six units left, of which two are in operating condition, both owned by Austin & Central Texas. The one you have pictured, #442, was originally built for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway and was numbered 842. The Austin & Central Texas is a tourist railroad, so it hauls passenger trains. The other four units are at the Illlinois Railway Museum, the Utah Railroad Museum, the California State Railroad Museum, and the Arkansas Railroad Museum.

Since there were only 75 to begin with, and only six left, and only two in operating condition, you did, indeed, see a rarity.

Okay, back to Jim:

Not sure what I can add. Best wishes for the holiday season.

Great pics, Liz!  Will definitely add this to our plans next time we head south for Houston (usually at least once a year).
