Virtual Rebar Camp - Event 8 - Active Rain - My poor Active Rain they butchered you

By

Social media can have a dark side, what happened during the Active Rain seminar, was the Dark Side.  I feel that I have a strong love for Active Rain as many of you here do as well.  To see the site presented in such a bad light it can cause a tarnishing of the brand.  I was not planning on attending the session except Jeremy with Active Rain and Jason Crouch were planning on attending.  This came from the Real Estate Tomato chat room.  I figured if they felt it could be of value to them, then I should show up.

I hesitate to write this, I know your not supposed to be negative or critical of other people or presentations.  I'm certainly not going to point out there name, but it was the weakest presentation I have seen on a webinar.  A few pointers going over this.

This was a Rebar camp.  People are expecting a little bit more than a normal conversation.  This is a fairly sophisticated audience.  Maybe you haven't been to a Rebar camp before, I attended the one in Denver.  I was blown away by the quality of the speakers and the information.  I actually had a presentation last week on Social Media.  I was copresenting with Josh Dorkin, of Bigger Pockets.  I was going to let him do most of the talking.  I'm ok with it, but not enough to call myself an expert ... yet.  Josh had a family emergency and I had to step up to the plate.  I had 13 people in my class and I did ok.  You would of done ok with that presentation for the type of audience I had.  This was a little basic for them

I'm a business partner of Constant Contact and I had an opportunity to present at the Virtual Rebar Camp.  I make this point to say that I passed because I felt it was over my head.  I use Constant Contact myself and I know it's a great product. (Full disclosure I am an authorized business partner.)  I'm very confident in my speaking abilities, and I have taught over 10 public classes this year.  I contacted my Constant Contact representative and wanted to see if they were available that day for the event.  They weren't.  I passed simply because my inexperience in being able to do an interesting webinar.

Know your audience.  I will say that my experience with putting on webinars is zero.  Listening to webinars I've heard a lot, but I'm not a junkie.   You have got to realize that Active Rain is not always warmly welcomed or perceived by the Realtor community as the place to go.  People perceive it's all just Realtors talking to Realtors.  They ignore all the consumer success stories there are to many good and smart people here on Active Rain to say this site is not worth your time.

Why are you talking about the points.  I know it was because it was on one of your screenshots, but talk about the right things.  I've had two people refered to this site.  I think I've invited four.  Your story is you don't have anybody who has accepted, but you've sent out over 50 invitations.  THIS IS NOT  A GOOD STORY TO TELL.

You didn't talk about the extra google juice or credibility that Active Rain offers.  I want some of that.  I'm not sure if I've got it or how I'm going to get it, but I know the answer is in here.  I even bet that I have that site bookmarked.  I'm pretty sure this wasn't even addressed.

As far as the actual presentation, raise your voice.  One of the great things I have going for me, which most good speakers do is that I can talk loud.  I can present in front of a room of 50 people with no microphone and people don't have an issue hearing me.  You were the quietest speaker of anyone that I heard that day.

Make it visually interesting.  You can see in my other blogs that I wrote in this series I did a poor job with pictures.  I think this one has the best chance of being read.  Thus I added pictures.  Your presentation was a PDF file with poorly scanned images of Active Rain screenshots.  Again, this is why I wanted my business partner to be there to present.  I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that you could of got somebody from the Active Rain staff to present with you.  Think how that gets you in their good graces.

The result of the call?  The dark side of social media reared it's ugly head.  I'm not sure how many people were on the call at the start.  I'm going to potentially guess 300.  It was conferencing software so it would make a beep whenever anyone would join or drop off.  Let me tell you there were people dropping off every few seconds.  It was torture to watch and listen too.  I like love this site.  If I was not familiar with this site, I certainly wouldn't be rushing over here.

This is the dark side of social media.  You have a customer of your product, the presenter.  They clearly love the product, they are featured in the area they work.  They even seemed like a nice person.  A social media expert? Someone you want representing your product to a group of several hundred targeted prospects?  This is an interesting quandry.  I used this time to listen and get caught up of some of my projects in the real world.

Interesting dilema to me, what do you think?

Hi Mike.  Interesting.

How did you like the virtual Rebar camp.

I registered but forgot.  Woops.

Was it of value? (outside of the AR presentation)

Thanks for writing,

Ken

It was of incredible value.  I definately learned a lot of great tips.  Now I'm simply trying to implement my strategy.

I skipped it because I felt like I knew ActiveRain,  I did not think I would learn anything new in a 1/2 (or were they hour ? sessions?)   I could learn more by spending that time reading some posts about AR here, Rereading some of Brad Andersohn's posts about ActiveRain that I have read before is a better use of my time than an intro to AR.  Instead I went to one of the other sessions about ???

I am glad the member wanted to present on ActiveRain, I was sorry to hear from someone else that it was not a great presentation in their opinion. Maybe though from the point of view of someone who is not a member it would spark an interest.

I am NOT a teacher or a presenter.  I have talked about social media and blogging a couple of times in front of a committee at my area association. Small group but it still terrified me.

I hope people will not be afraid to do sessions about ActiveRain at future rebarcamps, virtual or IRL.  There is so much negative talk  about ActiveRain out there in the RE world from the "cool kids" in the RE blogiverse.  ActiveRain deserves better! I am glad someone was enthused enough to do a presentation.

I know some of the feedback about VREBC  was that the sessions should be more advanced.  I thought that was interesting because Mike Mueller has said something about all rebarcamps should be very basic.  I wonder if the VREBC attendees are more advanced than those who attend IRL.

I think a basic intro to ActiveRain should be offerered at a rebarcamp.  Despite the cool kids opinion.. it is a great place for the RE industry to get it's feet wet.

I shoulda wrote a post... I have a a different kind of comment diarrhea here, sorry.

Session were 30 minutes maybe 45 I believe.  I think they scheduled 30 mins. then a 15 minute break.  I only attended because Jason Crouch and Jeremy said they were attending.

Interesting comment about your TEACHING and PRESENTING.  I'm willing to say that you know a ton about social media and real estate.  You easily could be, but you aren't.  I wish the presenter shared your feelings.

I might jump on and sign up to do a presentation in the future.  I know I could do a better job.  You are right about the hostility from the "cool" kids.  This certainly needs to be addressed.

Interesting comment on the skill level of Virtual vs. IRL attendees.  I understand what Mike is saying, but I prefer the opposite.  The basics can easily be learned online.  I'm at the point were I have pretty advanced questions, I think.  I understand his point though.

LOL, don't waste a post.  Save the post for comment diarrhea.  LOL.

Thanks a lot for commenting.  I'm disappointed this post didn't get more comments.  Maybe people are afraid.  What was so bad is I really wanted to learn.  Do I put my flag down in AR or do I go with Wordpress?  I think the answer is I do both, but what is my primary and message?  Oh, well.  I'll check out that Wordpress group here on Active Rain.

@Maureen - that was sweet of you to say, thanks. :-)

@Mike - It's too bad they didn't ask one of us to do a session, maybe next time we can get invited to do one?  Maybe we did and I just didn't know about it.   Sorry your experience was less than expected and deserved.

Wish you could make it to RainCamp this Wednesday, I guarantee I know where your flag would end up planted for sure! :-))

@Brad - Thanks for the comments.  Let me suggest a conspiracy.  The Real Estate Tomato wanted to make you look bad.  JK.  Jeremey was on the call I'd love to hear the feedback you got from him.  I'm still waiting for the camp to come to Denver.

I'm confused. If it was a virtual camp, why did you have to go to Denver, even though it's just a hop, skip, and jump away.

@ Russell - sorry if there was confusion, I'm sure it relates to my writing skill or lack thereof.  I attended a rebar camp in the past in Denver, believe it was in February of this year.  That was my first experience and it was awesome.  I attended the Virutal one here recently.

Some people did travel to go to vrebc.  Short distances, there were offices that opened their doors so that people could gather and do it together and eat pizza...

Virtual REBARCamp announcement will be Friday

On your mark, get set GO.....

Friday is the official announcement of the next virtual rebar camp.

IMHO Brad, Jeremy, Bob.... or someone who can do a good ActiveRain presentation should sign up to present on the topic of ActiveRain before someone else does.

Or if an ActiveRain enthusiast signs up first to present on ActiveRain I think a community builder / manager or gifted Ambassador ought to offer help, guidance to make the presentation something that will give people attending VREBC a good introduction to ActiveRain.... or reintroduction

I did not see the November vrebc presentation so can't be critical of it.

I think what needs to be stressed is the non member traffic (to counter the ActiveRain heresy that AR is for talking to others in the RE industry... like we are doing right now), the content for consumers  how easy it is to blog hyper-local content on ActiveRain and get the search engines to sit up and take notice.

Mike - Very interesting.  I didn't know, first of all, that AR was looked down upon by the "cool kids" of RE blogging.  I can't be everywhere, so if I have to choose a blog to spend my time, it will be AR because of what I learn and the Google juice.  AR has definitely had an impact on my business by placing me on Page 1 of Google for my market area.  No other real estate blog, no matter how "cool" is going to do that for me.  I've never been to a Virtual Rebar Camp, but would definitely like to attend.  How can I find out more?

The next VREBC is January 4, 2010?  I think.  The announcement is Friday, it will be all over Twitter, Facebook and ActiveRain just like the last one was.

@Maureen - Thanks for all your comments on the thread.  I have been in short sale purgatory with a couple of different deals the past week or two.

@Gail - Yep, we're not the cool kids.  That really doesn't concern me, am I being part of the smart kids.  That is what is most important to me.

I've done many presentations on Activerain and social media and though there is always people who will criticize something they don't understand or they haven't had a good experience with. It actually makes a presenter (At least to me) less impressive when they talk bad about anything. The main reason for that is as soon as they are done bad mouthing something, there always seems to be a push to use their product.
