Trends - You Can Follow Them - Or You Can Buck Them
This is an interesting post I cam across by what is considered stylish and hip. I have never been accused of being either.
I was reading an article on RIS Media this holiday weekend about interior colors for homes - they actually claim that Black is the new Brown...so, does this mean we are going to start seeing homes with black walls as they get ready to sell in the spring? Who knows...
This evening my wife and I were out, and she brought up in casual conversation that the new trend in socks is to wear them mismatched - like a stripe on the left and a polka dot on the right...'come-on, are you serious?' I asked her...and she sheepishly confided that she ordered 6 socks, justifying that she needed socks anyway for the winter.
OK, take a look at this...
Paint colour, fashion, furniture, hairstyles, toys, electronics, vacations, restaurants, you name it, they all follow trends.
Trends usually have an expiry date. They come and go with time. The word trendy often conjures up large dollar signs $$$$. Look at runway fashions. Would you buy something from a high end fashion house if you could afford it? Or would you look for a moderately priced knockoff from a department store?
When your child wants that hyped up toy of the season for Christmas, do you phone every store in town, or drive miles looking for it when it's out of stock? Think Cabbage Patch Dolls & Furbies.
What kind of furniture do you like to buy? Do you go for comfort or style? Reasonably priced black leather sectional? Or tres chic red tufted velvet? Maybe lower priced disposable furniture from Ikea? Just remember you can't move if your house is full of Ikea furniture. Once you take it apart you will never be able to put it back together agan.
Look at paint colours. They come, they go, they come back again. Remember peach and hunter green?
And then there are the trendy restaurants. Sushi anyone? Why is it that at the higher end restaurants you pay more money and get less food? I believe it's called Nouvelle Cuisine. Tapas restaurants are big here now. Sharing is good.
Have you done the Spa vacation yet? What ever happened to Disney cruises? Of course we now have the Staycation. The "Afro" hairstyle has returned only to be called the "Fro" this time around. And then there's Amy Winehouse and her "beehive."
Today there are magazines and television shows that teach us how to dress and decorate in high style on a lower budget. Years ago some people bought furniture and kept the plastic covering on to extend the life expectancy. Please don't tell me you know anyone today who still covers their furniture.
Trends and styles will keep changing over time. I've painted furniture, stripped it, antiqued it, and then started all over again. I've sold or thrown away antique furniture only to regret it now that I'm older and wiser and compare the quality to today's standards.
Remember styles are cyclical, trends don't usually have a long shelf live and "Everything old is new again"
