Leah,  I'll keep you guessing for a while.  On one of earlier posts, several people thought that I gave in too quickly -- so now I usually give the answer in about 24 hours.  I guess I'll keep you wondering until then.

It must be a big red colored rock that is cracked.

These look like petroglyphs to me too. Also looks like someone broke off the lime formation...

Hi Gary,

I'll cast my vote for some sort of petroglyphs as well.

Well, I may as well answer because I've had four correct answers now.  These are petroglyphs or as John said Native American art.

So, John, Ed, Michael and Michael, congratulations for the correct answer.  And Michael, I bet it is part of the lime formation although I couldn't find anywhere that it could have broken off.  It does sit kind of alone in the sagebrush.  It is located about halfway between Las Vegas  and Reno, Nevada near the California border.

Tim -- great descriptive answer.

Thank you all for looking and for the guesses.

Well now I have another big word for my vocabulary - petroglyph.  Kinda like hieroglyphic.

Cool.

Charles,  I bet there aren't too many in the Charlottesville area.  Thanks for stopping by and I hope you also have a Merry Christmas.  It's hard to believe but the holidays are almost here.

Marney,  They really are cool.  I've seen better ones, but this one happens to be on a friend's land in western Nevada.  I know there are actual sites that are on maps and marked throughout the Southwest.  In fact there is the Petroglyph National Monument next to Albuquerque, New Mexico.  It has over 20,000 carved images.

Dan,  They are kind of alike and both are fascinating.  I'm glad you liked the post.

Judi,  It really is fun to imagine where they were and what they were doing.  I love to find a point on a ridge where you can overlook a valley or stream and find obsidian or flint chips -- then I think of some Indian making arrowheads as he watched for game or maybe even enemies.  When I am in the mountains, my imagination goes wild.  I'm glad that you stopped by today.

Now that I read all the comments, does my guess count? I was thinking it was a trick question, but now that I go back to look at it, I see the secret writing.

Gary, very good test. What some saw as a rock is really something that is ancient - petroglyps is what I guessed since I've seen some in northern Arizona near the Petrified National Forest. ;-)

Jim,  Of course your guess counts - I always enjoy having you stop by.  And I've always enjoyed secret writing.  I even remember experimenting with invisible ink as a kid.

Teri,  I've heard there are some great petroglyphs all over Arizona.  Thanks for looking and for your comment.
