Craigdarroch Castle

Craigdarroch Castle was built in the 1890's by Robert Dunsmuir, a wealthy coal baron. The four storey castle, now owned by the Craigdarroch Castle Historical Museum Society, has lavish Victorian furnishings and stained glass windows. Since 1994 the castle has been used in movies and theatrical productions. An Oak staircase leads visitors up 87 steps to the tower, which has a great view of  Victoria.

From the 1st to the 31st of December there will be 39 performances of seasonal music, stories and children's entertainment at the Castle.

Tours start at 6:30 pm and tickets are $14.50 CDN / $ 14.00 USD for adults,

$6.50 CDN / $ 6.00 USD for children 6-18;

children 5 and under are free.

David,

Good localism; I hadn't even heard of this place before your post.

Thank you for your comment Terry. You may be more familiar with Hatley Castle, also in Victoria, which was built by James Dunsmuir,  son of Robert Dunsmuir. Both castles are interesting places to visit - Craigdarroch being downtown Victoria, whereas Hatley is now the location of Royal Roads University.

Hi Barrie - yes, it's a great place for a 'Christmassy' venue, they even provide cider and cookies!

Hi Fred - Another nice Victoria attraction for kids is the free trolley ride pulled by horses - we did it last weekend, and even in the rain it was fun!

Hi David,

 I can't believe I haven't seen this yet. I know where I'm going the next time I can get a few days off.

Hi Susan - yes, Victoria is full of surprises! You must have visited a few times from the sounds of things - at least you don't have too far to travel from Seattle. Happy New Year to you!
