New Orleans Homes, There are plenty of empties!

New Orleans Homes, Plenty of abandoned homes

New Orleans has a lot of great homes, we love to see them.  At the same time we have thousands of empties as I call them.  Over 40,000 would be a conservative guess.  Makes you wonder why there are so many empties.  Katrina was a major cause of the new empties but there were plenty before.  This in a city that could use more residents that can pay their way.  If we could rehabilitate or tear down just one hundred a month, we could finish in just under 35 years. Since the progress is more like 10 per month then 350 years is more likely.

Eric, that is very sad, those figures are staggering. The issue is... who can pay, who has a job, who can afford a renovation of that magnitude. The home you highlighted is a grand old home for sure, makes me think of all the happy times that happened there and could happen again. Such a waste.

Eric, I agree with Andrea - Very sad and staggering numbers.... I had no idea the situation was so bad in New Orleans.

Hi Eric, This is a very sad commentary. With the hundreds of billions used to bail out our banks only to find that so many are not living up to their end of bargain, then see the see the blight of the " Empties" , it makes you wonder how our priorities have changed. With a disinterested press corp, situations like this continue to exit. Hundreds would be too many and be a local travesty. Tens of thousands is a state and national tragety.

Your work is always enlightening and excellent in its presentation. Please accept this Award of Merit for your post with our Congratulations.

Eric, congratulations on receiving the PBG blue ribbon! Great photo.  Eric, who owns these homes?  The banks?  Who will be responsible for the expense of demolishing?  Are there problems with vagrants, bugs, mice, mold, and various health hazards?  Very sad situation.  How can people help?  Brad Pitt can only do so much.

Sallie, The City is responsible but does very little unless money is involved to family and friends. They have been known to tear the worng ones down.

Eric - The archetecture that is indigenous to your area is so unique.  It is a sad state of affairs that there isn't an innovative way to restore and preserve what is there.  Not everyone is in a position to be a homeowner in New Orleans.  However, I would think the draw of tourism would draw investors into the area that could rehab, restore, and perhaps turn many of these properties into rental properties or vacation homes.  I'm sorry to hear The City seems to not move unless money is involved to family and friends.

Myrl, The problem is not new. Its what happens when there is only one political party. Race is always used as a scape goat for failure.  Many public officials are going to jail almost monthly. I place a lot of blame on the Federal Government. Its just too many poor people in one place. Between public housing and Section 8 you most likely have 20,000 households out of a population of 325k. Figure a average house of 4 then you have 25% being taken care of by the rest of us. The area is far poorer than almost any area in Blue States.
