Open Houses: Are they "Worthwhile" or not?

I strongly contend "Yes, for many reasons:" First, for our clients and our future clients. It is a service to our clients and to our community. They bring in possible buyers for our clients, while showcasing our area homes.  Yes, not all people are looking to buy who come thru - some not at all; some not right away -  but in the future, near or otherwise. True that most buyers come from agents  - historically. But, with the internet age (yes, we are in it as is supported by us being on this blog), many consumers (ie. shoppers) shop somewhat or a lot and then look for an agent. So, we are of service to them by showing a product and by introducing ourselves as their potential next service provider.  So, I say "Yes I Ken!" Which leads to my next point...

Business is obtained for Realtors hosting Open Houses: From myself who just sold the same house for clients I bought for two years ago - having met them at the very same home they bought - to the agent who held open a house recently and, it turns out, shoppers came thru who she had grown up (in another state) next door to.  Her service to them - they found a great agent - her business/reward: a sale of $1.249M. They had another Realtor in mind to call prior to meeting her. ALSO paramount is the knowledge a Realtor can gain from conversing with consumers: Everything from how to talk with them in and of itself to taking a pulse of the current market cycle - knowing it! Know your market, know your customer - know your business. So, I say " Yes I Ken!"

Ok, to be fair,  I have one perspective - of an agent who does them up to 3/4's of the weekends of the year.  (Once-in-awhile, Sat. and Sun. both in a weekend.) But the more at-bats...the more home runs! So, let's hear from other Realtors and folks.  What are your thoughts?!

I agree that open houses can be a great thing. You are not necessarily going to sell the house you are holding open but you can get buyers. The experience and exposure are definitely worth the effort, espceially if you are a little bit creative about the way you do tem.

Don't expect to get a different result if you are doing the same thing as everyone else. Make it an event. Advertise differently. Have a little fun with it.
