ROOFING

Here is a bit of information, although not too new but up to date. On installing new roofs for over thirty years we certainly have seen our share of poor workmanship and improper installations. Over the last several years it has come to my attention that homeowners are not aware of the proper installation of a roof on a 3/12 or below pitch. Now I understand that most homeowners would not have that info unless the contractor informed them about it, so thats what we are going to do now. Besides the general installation method of cutting shingles to manufacturers spec. which are required on any pitch roof we have noticed that on several inspections most roofers just cut shingles to what ever they feel is easier to lay down, and saves time. Now the key here is if that roof is not cut to spec. is not warranted anymore. second if it is put over another roof it will not be warranted for the full term even when cut to spec. But getting back to the 3/12 pitch roof we just wanted to let homeowners know that the manufacturer requires that a ice and snow under layment is required on the entire roof, not just the first 3 foot up perimeter. This is required because at that pitch or below ice and snow just sit on those roofs causing major problems over time. So if your roof ever needs replacement which it will, make sure you are getting that under layment for a 3/12 or below pitch. By below we just mean that on several roofs in the past mostly on dormers roofs where framed a bit below that 3/12 pitch. In todays market that pitch is very rare on architects plans.
