Top 5 Ski Resorts in Colorado

Living in beautiful Colorado offers a little of something for everyone:  shopping, indulging in great food, an exciting night life or my personal favorite, SNOW!  Growing up in Star Valley, Wyoming I lived for weekends riding Teton Village and Grand Targhee, which happen to be two of the best mountains in the United States.  Having recently moved to Colorado I have quickly grown to appreciate being nestled at the foothills of one of nature's greatest creations; thousands and thousands of acres of terrain, perfect for skiing and riding.  This amazing state is very lucky to have some of the best ski resorts in the county.  Whether this is your first time on skis or your 20th season on the slopes, disappointment is not an option in Colorado.  Who is to say that a "top 5 ski resorts" list can actually be compiled but, having snowboarded and skied all over the western United States this is my top five Colorado resorts.

1. Breckenridge:  What can I say, with America's highest chairlift, groomed expert and beginner trails and five terrain parks designed for every level of rider, who wouldn't put Breck on the top of their list?  Not to mention, great restaurants, a fun night life and plenty of other winter activities.

2. Aspen:  If you are in search of a luxury vacation (in the snow), it's Aspen hands down.  Four mountains, including: Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowpass + 5,000 acres of perfect skiing terrain = a snow riders dream.  Aspen is also famous for ice skating, hot air balloons, award winning dinning and lively bars.

3. Vail:  Even though Vail seems to always be ranked North America's #1 ski resort, I put it a little further down my list because it's also the largest ski resort on the continent.  Amazing riding, breath taking views, three parks, one super pipe, one half pipe, you can't talk it down, Vail truly is "one of a kind".  Lift tickets are a little pricey here; however the experience and the on mountain dining are worth it!  Hey you may even run into your favorite movie star!

4.  Copper:  A powder day at Copper?  Yes please!  Copper is a great mountain for beginners with more of a flat terrain lower mountain and beautiful snow packed tree runs and steeper terrain the higher up you go.  Note to self (and to those traveling), Copper is more than 10,000 ft above sea level, drink LOTS of water and do not forget to load on sun screen or you will be hurting in the morning!

5.  Steamboat:  Last but definitely not least, Ski Town USA, Steamboat Springs.   With six mountain ranges and 3,000 acres it is on the smaller side, making it the ideal mountain to perfect your skills.  Steamboat gets dumped on with 300+ inches of snow a year, this champagne powder has only existed in your dreams!  Make the trek to Strawberry Park after a day on the slopes.  It is quite the drive through the mountains but once you sink into the 104 degrees natural hot springs, you will not regret it for a minute!

Like I said before, it's your opinion whether a list of "top 5 ski resorts" can be made or not.  Take it or leave it, this is my honest shot at MY top 5 ski resorts.  Small disclaimer:  I have not yet made it to southwestern CO to ride the beautiful slopes of the San Juan and Sangre De Cristo mountain ranges, so stand by for list two.

Kate - great information for people thinking of visiting your area. No need to make it a members only post. You want consumers to have this type of information. Join the group - Things to do and Places to visit - this is a perfect place to post a blog like this.
