Are you Sentimental about Christmas?

Christimas ornaments It seems that people are turning more and more toward simpler traditions this season and learning to appreciate memories of Christmases past.

For me, this is not a new notion since I have been sentimental about the holiday season for as long as I can remember.  As I unpacked my Christmas things this year I came face-to-face with the reminders of years gone by.

For every year that my husband and I have been together, I have a dated Christmas ornament.  The tradition started in 1989 with the first one he brought to me that was erroneously labeled "Congratulations on your new home", a source of amusement since I was living in a rented apartment at the time.  From then on, it continued through the years up to this year which will be the 20th dated ornament on our tree.

Included in the mix is an ornament of a house which was symbolic of the year that we bought our first home.  There is also the San Francisco 49ers ornament from time that I lived in that city as well a dozen or so cable cars scattered throughout the tree.  Following that was the Kansas City ornament as I briefly followed Joe Montana's move to his new team, and, of course the most significant all of my sports memorabilia - the New England Patriots, which has now graced my tree for many years.

As a young woman in one of my first apartments with not much money to spare, I picked up some very Christmas centerpieceinexpensive treasures to adorn my very inexpensive tree at the local Safeway Supermarket.  I still have some of them to this day.  Were they cheap? Yes.  Are they precious to me?  Absolutely.

The angel that stands at the top of the tree has a dress that is a little worse for the wear but I would not part with her since she has stood watch over so many happy times and family gatherings.

Every year when I open the Christmas box it incites a trip over all my Christmases past. Those trinkets and baubles are all a part of what has gone before - a part of a legacy that I continue to treasure.

Claudette:  I love opening up those boxes of Christmas ornaments.  Same as you, there are so many that hold special memories.  I believe the one I love the most was one of my parents first ornaments, and I just loved it as a child.  Snowman on a reindeer.  It is falling apart, but still part of my tree. I'll have to get our tree up soon.

Chris Ann:

I am glad to be in such good company in my sentimentality about the season. I don't have any ornaments that go back to my parents, but they would be very nice to have.

More good company.  Deep thinkers are bound to be a bit nostalgic.

Claudette - Your simple story today made me cry. Traditions are important. They are memories in which we create and live. I've always wanted to buy a Christmas ornament for my son (each year), but never got around to it.

This year, I'll be sure to surround him with all his gifts around the Christmas tree. It's going to be the first Christmas that he's old enough to know the meaning of receiving gifts.... I could already picture him with his stand-up hair, pajamas and so excited when he opens his Handy Manny talking toolbox.

I am glad you liked it.  I guess we are both traditional and sentimental about the holidays. I get most of my dated ornaments from the Hallmark website at Hallmark website if you want to pick one up for your son.

It sounds as though you are in for a fun Christimas with your family.

Claudette - I'm with you.   Our very favorite tradition is decorating the tree and remembering each special ornament from years past.  We even still have some "ornaments" that my son made out of construction paper when he was in kindergarden.  Now that he's away at college, we'll wait for him to come home to decorate our tree.   I look forward to this tradition more than any other.

That sounds like a nice tradition to decorate the tree together.  I can't say that I have gotten my husband to do that.  I usually put up all of the decorations and he gets the honor of putting on that one special dated ornament for the year.

Hi Claudette:

I'm very sentimental about Christmas also...

Funny, we do the same and get a dated ornament!

It is a nice tradition to get those ornaments every year, but I don't know how much more I can put on one tree...
