The National Park Service and California State Parks are gearing up for their annual Old Time Holiday celebrations on Saturday, December 5, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Staff at both Whiskeytown National Recreation Area and Shasta State Historic Park are breaking out the garlands, ribbon, and bows to bring the holiday season to life in your parks. Visitors to Whiskeytown can make and take home their own holiday wreath.Visitors to Shasta State Historic Park will see that the holiday spirit is already on full display at the Courthouse Museum. "To light up the holidays and bring home some festive, sweet treats, visitors can make a handdipped candle and decorate gingerbread cookies at Shasta State Historic Park," added Supervising State Park Ranger Lori Martin.
Sharing in the holiday spirit of giving, the Friends of Whiskeytown, the National Park Service and Shasta State Historic Park are asking for visitors' help in providing a holiday meal for people in need within our community. Food drive containers will be available at Whiskeytown's Visitor Center and the Camden House, as well as the Courthouse Museum in Shasta.. In addition to wreath-making, activities at Whiskeytown's Tower House Historic District will include craft activities for all ages, historical games, tours of the historic Camden House, and holiday carolers from French Gulch School and local Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops. There will also be a special 15% off sale on all books and souvenirs at the Whiskeytown Visitor Center. Shasta State Historic Park activities will also feature a ‘49er miner's tent camp, and shopping at the 1800's general store. The Northern Gateway Chorus and the Back Forty String Band will donate their musical talents at both parks during the day.
The event at Whiskeytown is free to visitors, and a vehicle pass is not required for parking at the Tower House Historic District parking lot. All activities at Shasta State Historic Park are free with the exception of admission to the Courthouse Museum. Admission to the Court House museum is $3.00 per adult, $2.00 for children aged 6- 17 years, and children 5 and under are free. A printed program describing the scheduled events will be available at both parks. In addition, visitors can pick up copies of a self- guided "auto tour" identifying historic spots on the drive between Shasta and the Camden House in Whiskeytown's Tower House Historic District. The events will go ahead as scheduled, rain or shine.
