You sold your house in Brookville, NY. Time to have a big celebration. After all it took so long to get a buyer. But hold on. You still have plenty to do. Whether you are downsizing or moving out of town, here are a dozen important things you have to do before you settle into your next home.
•1. Notify your mortgage company immediately in writing that your house has been sold and you will pay off the mortgage loan.
•2. Get estimates from moving companies & storage facilities.
•3. Recycle unneeded belongings by donating to charity of choice.
•4. Arrange for transfer of utilities. Inform utilitiy companies where to send final bill for LIPA, National Grid, water etc.
•5. Notify fuel dealer and obtain oil reading.
•6. Update all financial accounts - checking, savings, retirement, investment, installment purchase accounts.
•7. Check with attorney about status of your will and update him/her on where to reach you.
•8. Update mailing address and get forwarding address cards from post office.
•9. Cancel or transfer phone, cable, lawn service, trash pickup, newspaper and all home services.
•10. Put different colored stickers on boxes sorted by room in your new home. Then place a matching colored balloon or piece of paper on the door of the appropriate room.
•11. After closing, deposit proceeds from sale and cancel Homeowners insurance on old home.
•12. Send a thank you note to your real estate agent for a job well done.
