Let's hear it for the Dirty Thirty! Books, that is. Thirty most challenged......

Dirty Thirty

Look what I found in my old things this time.

It's a  clipping from some magazine back in the early 80's that has come back into my life.

This list of the Dirty Thirty inspired me to start a reading project.

Being a teacher at the time with easy access to the library, I vowed that I'd read them all.

If they were dirty or challenged that was motivation for me to find out why.

This list was compiled based on surveys from 1965 to 1982 of the most challenged books.  I kept the list to mark off books as I read them.

I have read lmany of them and must say some of them are great books and you'll wonder why they received objections.

Keep in mind this list is very old. No telling how they'd rank today.

Happy reading!!

Leslie, I guess so.

Nutsy, consider them added.  They do do some pretty offensive writing about my little godson.

I personally find nothing offensive in the writings of Mr. Charles and Ms. Kate. Nutsys writing is another matter.

James, Nutsy is a terrific writer.  You need to be more appreciative.

Zane, I'd forgotten all that.  Did you read the book to see if it was relevant?  To tell the truth, I don't remember what the book is about.  I do think I read it though.

Inna, what a change just since 2009 when this blog was written!!  It is so hard to believe that books are no longer cherished!  In 2009 there were no ipads?

Thank you so much for this. I was talking about this list to an American friend just the other day. My school in Canada included the list on our curriculum encouraging students to read and report on their value.

Jason, I wanted to read them all and got through several of them.  Now our reading time has been cut down seriously.  We have so many internet chores that we have less time for reading.

"Catcher in the Rye" was required reading in my advanced English class in

college in the early 60's. What was memorable was the teaching assistant

wo discussed it was gay and was murdered in downtown Berkeley, CA near the campus.

Don, that's an interesting story.  Was he murdered while you were in school or much later?

WHile I was taking the class. He didn't show up one day and we heard he had

been murdered. That was 1961.

That is horrible, Don.  I hope it was not a hate crime because he was gay.
