Alan, nice photo of a soaring bird.  Not sure what kind of bird this is but he clearly is enjoying his flight.  I expect he can see quit a bit from that vantage.

 Looks like a turkey vulture, this are usually flying around something dead on the ground.

We have a lot of those turkey vultures around here.  So beautiful from afar and when they are soaring but YIKES!!!  Those suckers are ugly up close, especially when they are tearing about some road kill.  :)

I think it may be a turkey vulture, it was souring at quite a height. Photo is on x10 zoom and took quite a time to take as it was difficult to keep up with it.

Turkey vulture or buzzard, he has a huge wing span. I've never seen them in the air like that, just on the ground feeding.
