Are you prepared for a random visit from your client(s)?

Are you prepared for a client to visit you all of a sudden? I'm not just talking about someone that just shows up at your office, but that is certainly one situation. I'm talking about a client that wanted to stop by for a few minutes to discuss a home they noticed or the loan documents you asked for. How prepared are you and your office to have such a visit?

Maybe you keep a neat office, so this isn't an issue for you. But let's take it a step further. How about if your client(s) brought the rest of the family? If you want to be sure that your client(s) is not distracted, its best to have something in your office for children. Having a 'play box' in your office is a start. Fill the box with things like these:

  • Crayons
  • Coloring Books
  • Toy Cars
  • Dolls ('action figures' for the boys)
  • Puzzles
  • Crosswords
  • etc.

Do they have older kids? It doesn't hurt to have a Nintendo DS (or similar hand held game system) and a few games. A good used Nintendo DS can be picked up at a GameStop, or local game store. They are pretty inexpensive and come with a charger. Plus while you are there, you can pick up a few games. It does not have to be expensive and you may have this stuff lying around your house already.

It will help keep the kids occupied while you and your client(s) talk about business. Plus your client(s) will appreciate the extra thought.

My office would be fine, it's all the stuff in my car that I have to worry about.  I always have some crayons and colouring books about for the kids.  It's the parents that I have trouble amusing.

Boy scout motto, Be Prepared!  at first I was thinking about "looking the part" I hate when I see people dressed unprofessionally in my office... That is even more important than crayons!  I think the parents should be prepared to take care of their own kids...

Malcolm - You're scaring me with 'the stuff in my car' comment. Not sure if you have important things or if its messy. lol

Debbie - Its a good idea to be prepared. These items are not expensive.

Robert - If you've been dealing with families a lot, you know that its not always the case that the parents are prepared to keep them entertained. In an ideal world, they would bring what the children like best. Better to be prepared than to have an unproductive meeting. Good point about everyone in the office being dressed appropriately though.

Loreena - I believe you are prepared, so no worries there.

I've had a few random visits to my office from clients.  I really dislike that they just drop in, unannounced.  But, it has nothing to do with the state of my office.  I just like to know in advance, be as prepared as possible and not have it interrupt other work that may be as important, or more.

John ~ Great post. Lesson, always be prepared. My office would work fine but I don't have little kid toys anymore. I do have the Wii though.

I don't keep toys in my office any more although my son has plenty at my home. What I do have at my office are crayons, an extra computer for kids entertainment and a portable dvd player. I learned early on when I had a client who brought his 7 kids to the office that you have to be prepared.

John, I know several title companies set up for young ones that include a seperate room with an X-box or Playstation and loads of toys and the parents are able to see them through the glass while they close on their new home. My office does not have anything like that...hmmm...guess that needs more thought.

You are a wise man John, your idea lets you get the job done and keeps the kiddies happy too. You gotta remember they are only kids and get bored w/ our grown up dealings.

Thank you Bruce. Its just a little something that could make a difference.

Doug - I dont receive too many unannounced drop ins, but its good to be prepared, just in case.

Thank you Gary.

Monique - The wii is perfect. There are plenty of kid friendly games for that system. I guess that could take place of many toys for older kids. Chances are pretty good that a parent of a toddler would have something for their child already.

James - Sounds perfect as well. Funny thing is that I thought about a DVD player and maybe some 30 minute shows or something, but wasnt sure how much room everyone has in their office. The set up you have should cover all bases.

Wanda - Thats a great title company. Considering the parents may be there from 45 minutes to 2 hours (depending if docs are ready on time), this is the ideal set up. Plus, having them in another room where you can still see them. Very nice.

Cynthia - This is a people business, and people come with kids. :-)  I appreciate the kind words. Still liking that butterfly.
