 MY MOTOROLA DROID DOES!

Right before our trip to Florida for Thanksgiving, I decided to upgrade my phone at Verizon after having a Blackberry Curve over a year.  I was in the store getting a Netbook for our trip, and that's when I first set eyes on the Motorola Droid.

I was a little reluctant to give up my trusty Blackberry that had grown attached to me like glue.  I asked my sales rep tons of questions and probably spent a good 45 minutes in the store playing with this new Motorola Droid phone, pondering whether or not I could give up the trusted name-brand Blackberry for another Motorola phone.  After owning a Motorola once before, I swore I'd never own another.  That old phone was a piece of junk, every problem that could go wrong, did go wrong with it.

The sales rep at the Verizon store in Sturbridge did a great job answering my questions and concerns.  He explained that the Droid isn't a phone, it's a computer with an application to access a phone on it.  It is an intelligent piece of equipment.

After owning this phone for several weeks and really spending hours playing with it and getting to know it, I figured I'd share with you some of my favorite apps for business, fun and entertainment.  All of these can be found in the Market on your phone and all are free!

Here's My List of What My Droid Does:

  • ShopSavvy- This app allows you to scan in bar-codes at a store on most popular items and performs a search to find where the lowest advertised price is in other local stores and online.  Tried it out on a Kung Fu Panda dvd we had lying around, works great!
  • iMusic - Great app to download all of your favorite music for free.
  • Swift - For Twitter, this app is very user friendly and helps me stay connected to my Twitter account on my phone.  Was sad to have to give up my TinyTwitter on my Blackberry, but this app is just as good, if not better.
  • Bloo - A great Facebook app to help you stay connected on Facebook.  It is a little more user friendly than the mobile Facebook already on your phone, so I like to use a little combination of both.
  • Handcent - A great sms messaging app that you can customize and adjust settings for your text messages.  You can set different LED colors to flash for different contacts and set it to pop open a bubble when you get a new text.  Much better than the original messaging app on the phone.
  • DroidLight - A great flashlight app that helps shed some light on those dark situations.  Best flashlight app I have seen for the droid, uses your built in flash for light rather than just the screen.
  • Toggle Settings- Convenient app that allows you with one click to easily change all of the settings on your phone such as silent mode, bluetooth, ringer volume, etc.
  • Advanced Task Killer - Helps kill all of those applications running in the background that you're not using so you don't drain your battery life too fast.
  • FlyScreen - When enabled, you can set your phone to show news, weather and recent Tweets when your phone is in locked mode.
  • YouMail- Great voicemail app that lets you listen to your voicemails on your phone without having to call voicemail.  You can also get text transcripts and emails of your voicemails.
  • Gmote - Turns your Droid into a remote for your computer.
  • Droid Coupons- You can lookup and email yourself coupons for many local restaurants and stores.
  • Mabilo Ringtones- Download tons of hot new songs for ringtones for free!
  • Where's My Droid - If you lose your phone and it's on silent mode, you can text a specified message to your phone that will make it start ringing so you can find it.
  • Google Sky Maps - If you like astronomy, this is a really cool app that allows you to find and name the stars in the sky.

So far so good with this cool little phone.  Can't beat a touchscreen AND a keyboard option!  This is a lean, mean social networking machine with the bonus of phone capabilities built in.  Check it out!

I'll talk Santa into dropping on down the chimney. Thanks for the review. I like people in our profession that have no reason to spin whether it it good or not and telling it from experience. I think that is why social media web 2.0 is huge...the public wants to hear from the guy or gal that shelled out for the product, the service to guide them into doing the same or making a big cruve to drive around the consumer pothole. Happy holidays. Always good to buy yourself a little something around the holidays.

From all I've read, this phone is going to be giving the iPhone a run for it's money.

So glad you're enjoying it. Keep us posted.

I have a Blackberry Curve. It's by far the best phone I've ever owned. But until Blackberry gets all the apps that the Droid and i-Phone have available to them, I'm always looking for a new phone.

Hi Robert!

It wasn't as good with the email until I figured out the trick.  I'm on email 24/7 and BELIEVE ME, it HAS to work!  What I ended up doing was making my emails pull through my Gmail account I setup a few months ago.  The emails still look like they're being sent from kathleencooper@jckcrealty.com, but they all come through my Gmail account and go out that way on my phone.  Quickest way to get your emails to your phone and to be notified of them.  Was very easy to setup through my gmail account online and once I did, I had no email issues.  I have 3 email accounts going through that 1 gmail account and they are all clearly labeled and you can choose to respond from the email address it came to or by a default email address of your choice.  Since the browser on the phone is through Google, it'd be smart to have a Gmail account, even if just to sync your other email addresses through it as if it were Outlook on your phone.

Hope that helps!

Sincerely,

Kathleen

PS - I saved my Blackberry Curve and haven't sent in my rebate form for this phone yet, just in case I didn't like it.  I haven't thought once about switching back.  Never thought I could give up the Blackberry, but now I say "good riddance"!  =)

Kathleen , I have had a Motorola Phone for years with no issues, and have been trying to talk myself in to a Blackberry Storm 2...I was ready to upgrade to a phone with multiple apps, Droid you say?

Hi Steve!

I liked the Storm, but my mom's friend has one and said he didn't like it that much, very hard to type on it.  I am not a fan of just a touch screen, but the keyboard does take some getting used to on the Droid.  For me it was going to be a Droid or the Blackberry Tour, but after I toyed around with the Droid, the choice was obvious.  I love it, husband gets jealous that I play with it too much!  LOL

The old Motorola I had (can't even remember the model) was about 3 yrs. ago and the speakers blew from using speaker phone and it was a really cheap feeling phone.  Then I've had family that have had the Razor phones and didn't like them, so I stayed away.  Only negative to the Droid for me so far is that the battery dies really fast, but it also charges really fast.  Always need to have a car charger on you and remember to use it.  That's the same with a lot of these high tech phones though.

Sincerely,

Kathleen

Thanks Kathleen, That is very helpful I was concerned a phone store employee would be pushing what ever the company wanted sold...and didn't want to take them for their word...Salesmen you just can't trust them!

That ShopSavvy thing sounds awesome!  I don't think I could go to one of those fancy phones.  I've had the Treo 750 for 2 1/2 years and barely use anything on it except phone, email, and solitaire (freecell screen is too small)...

I have to say...solitaire is mighty fun on this nice, big touch screen!  :)  The ShopSavvy thing is awesome, I was so amazed when I first tried it out.  Uses your phone's camera to scan in the barcode and search prices everywhere.  So cool!

Kathleen, Thanks for the review.  This is the phone I'm leaning towards getting.  My only question is does it work well with Top Producer?  One of my team members has the G1 with T-Mobile and loves the little android.  It's time for me to make a choice.

I tried a BLB Storm 2, and hated the typing. I sent it back, and I think I'm going to a Droid- thanks for the review.

That is quite a list Kathleen. I think I'll be in the market for a new phone soon. I've enjoyed my iPhone, but Im really not liking how many calls I drop.

Kathleen, thanks for sharing this info with us. I love my BB, but will seriously consider the Droid when my contract runs out. I tried out the Storm, and didn't like it at all. It was more of a PUSH screen, and I have long nails, so the BB works great. I do like techology though, and love the IPhone, but will never leave Verizon! ;-)

I'm the same exact way!  Loved the IPhone, but would never switch from Verizon...ever!  I have had them for almost 8 years and they've been great to me.  I hear horror stories about all of the other networks.

As far as it working well with Top Producer, I don't subscribe to the mobile application from them, but I would think that it would work.  Top Producer sells a subscription just for mobile capabilities on PDA phones.  I'd talk to your sales rep about it.

Sincerely,

Kathleen

Yeah, thats how I am with AT&T. I had Verizon but for some reason the reception at my house was not good, so I had to switch. The problems I have now I think are more an iphone issue than an AT&T thing. Who knows. Maybe I'll switch phones and realize it was the provider the whole time.

I have a Blackberry Curve, Kathleen.  I have been thinking about switching to an iPhone (however you spell it) since my stepson who is an attorney loves his so much.  Never heard of the Droid, actually, but will check into it!  Thanks for the heads up on this!

I was going to go to upgrade to the Tour, I am scared of missing out on the instant email push the Black berry has... it often gets to my BB before it pops into my outlook on my desk top.

Kathleen-I am going to be getting a new phone soon too and I hadn't heard of this one.  I don't know if I will give up the blackberry but sounds like this could be worth the change.  I am going to use this for a re-blog to see what input I get.  Thanks for the post!

Hey Kathleen,

I've been contemplating making the move as well, but like you dont' want to relinquish the rooted Blackberry! It's like my left arm! I can't imagine living without it! Your blog will make the transition easier... thanks!

I like your description of Droid as a "social media machine." That's definitely worth a look the next time I'm in the store.

Hi Kathleen.  Great review and dialogue here.  The Droid sounds like it is worth a serious look.  My little BB Pearl, though I love her, is near retirement age.

John - Good luck!  I've had issues with Verizon, just like any cell company has issues, but never as many as with the other companies.  I know a lot of people with Verizon and a lot of people with other networks and the Verizon ones don't seem to complain as much.  :)

Diane - It's a great phone, not for everyone though.  Some people complain it has "too much" on it and everyone won't use it all.  I love it though, can spend all day playing with it and learning new features.

Shirley - I loved my BB Curve, but I can honestly say that I haven't even looked back once now that I've switched.  I kept my Curve to download all of my old stuff off of it, but I haven't even taken it out of the jacket I put it in the day I switched!  LOL  Love my Droid!

Robert - I know what you mean!  I've had the same amount of reliability now using my email through Gmail and setting it up on my phone as I did on my old Curve phone.  No complaints about email here since I learned how to set it up properly.  :)

Debra - Good luck!  Play around with it in the store at least to see what you think.  Very cool features on it.

Greg - I hear ya!  I couldn't even imagine life after Blackberry....Just ask my friends, that thing was like a third limb of mine!

John - That's exactly what I think of it.  The guy in the store was right when he said it's really a mini computer with an app to use it as a phone.  This thing is as good as my netbook!

Kathryn - I tried the Pearl first, but couldn't get used to the keys on it.  Traded it in after a week for the Curve and loved that for the year and a half I owned it.  Now I'm in Droid heaven.  :)

Kathleen,

Do you download attachments, signed forms, and other sensitive docs?  Is it secure?  Are you comfortable that your account will not be hacked and someone steal your passwords, contact info, etc?

Hi Kathleen,  I just bought my droid last week.  Was a Palm user for 10 years.  Could not wait anymore for the Palm Pre to come to Verizon so I bought the Droid.  Love it, although it's crashed twice since owning it.  Have you ever answered your Droid, and the only way you could hear them talk is if you hit speaker phone?  It's happened several times, and I'm not sure if its the phone or operator error.

I don't download and send sensitive docs through it.

Jim - I have had that happen as well.  When I get frusturated with it, my husband reminds me that it's like a computer and computers can do the same thing at times.  I've also had the speaker issue a few times.  Only once in awhile, but it's happened.  Not enough for me to give up the Droid.  I love how easy it is to use.  MLS is so much better to navigate through now on this than on my old Blackberry Curve.
