How Delaware Warms the Heart and Body

What a great way to give back to the community. Wilmington Delaware contractor, Horizon Services, has a program, Warm the Heart. Co-owner, Mark Aitken, started the program 4 years ago as a service to serve the needy in the New Castle Delaware area. Horizon Services in partnership with Delmarva Power and the Lennox Company installs new heating systems and repairs and upgrades older systems, free of charge for those most in need.  There are about 50 clients at this time and the program is now expanding to Kent and Sussex Counties and 14 families will have new furnaces installed before the winter is out.

After Mark and his crew saw seniors leaving oven doors open to provide heat, they saw the need first-hand to expand their program. "We decided to dig even deeper into our pockets this year to extend the program statewide." he said.

Beginning the first of this month, Warm the Heart application forms have been placed at community centers,  libraries, public buildings and nonprofit organization offices in all three counties. A committee of community representatives will review the applications in January and select the families that will receive new furnaces or have their systems repaired.

"This is not a government program, this is not something set up by nonprofits, this is a business." Delaware Governor, Jack Markell, said. "Delaware is a state of neighbors and we come together to help each other."

What a terrific way to give back to the community. This is truly in the spirit of giving.
