Politics and Real Estate

No - not the sort you would immediately think of.  This is another topic altogether.  I have been asked to run for office by the CEO of our local association.  That they would ask is flattering given they have over 13,000 members to choose from - however - now I need to find out what it means if I'm elected - both in terms of time commitment and in terms of how that time is spent.

I'm hopeful that this would not be a flashback to Corporate America and trying to turn reluctant "oil tankers" on a dime.  I think a good next step would be to touch base with a couple of those currently elected to get their take on it. 

Anyone out there had any experiences they care to share as an elected official for their local association?

I have been a Director on the Ann Arbor Board of Realtors for 6 years. Love it, best board I have ever been on. There is no pressure to raise funds, like most non profits. Great commarade. I also serve on the MLS Committee where we get to hash out issues before they hit the Realtor Community. Go for it  !!

They asked me for years before I said YES, sorry I waited so long.

I think it bears investigating. As they say, all politics is local. I served on our local MLS committee for 18 months and resigned in frustration because we couldn't agree to do the smallest things -- like increase fines for blatant violations of listing rules. I was asked to run for the board for several years and when personal obligations finally allowed me to do so, a dark horse candidate was put up to run against me -- for an office that had been unopposed for years. You also need to think hard about whether the time spent in meetings is (1) time that will fit around the routine of productive work you've set up for yourself -- or can you adjust that routine to the association schedule, and (2) time you want to take away from your business/personal time. It is nice to think of a non-profit that doesn't ask you to raise funds, as Missy mentions, but on the other hand, serving on those kinds of non-profits may involve giving back to the greater community, a distinct value in itself!

Good luck with your decision I would be flattered but at this point in my business I do not have the time to devote to anything else. Time would be my deciding factor.

Rebecca - That is the dilemma for me.  Given the business and the Agent Leadership Council that's already knocking at 60-70 hours per week.
