July 3, 2003 was the day we adopted our first two children.

Being so close to Independence Day, we named it "Dependents' Day."  Yes, we celebrate it each year with fireworks.

For information on becoming a foster parent or an adoptive parent, please call the Connecticut Department of Children & Families at 1-888-KID-HERO, or visit them online at HelpAChildShine.com.

Happy Dependents Day!

and Happy 4th of July, Independence Day too!

Great creative idea for the kids.... Certainly makes them feel extra special.

Maureen - We woke this morning and wished each other a Happy Dependent's Day.  We do it every year.  And then we do it again throughout the day whenever the kids start acting up...

Dan - This is more for us parents.  Adoption Day wasn't a big deal for the kids, as they had already been with us as foster children for a year, and even my eldest, who was nearly 7 at the time, just didn't quite get it. Today reminds us of all we've done and how far we've come.  It also makes us realize just how far the boys have come, too.

Congrats on your special day!  It is great people like that truly are hero's.  Enjoy your holiday.

Thanks, but we're not heroes.  We're just parents.  We're the lucky ones - we have great kids.

Don... True it may not a big deal to the kids now.... but wait 20 years & I'll bet they appreciate the day and will look forward to celebrating every year.

Don, you're wrong. You are heroes.. you truly are to those boys and a true model to others who can bring love to the lives of children who need it.  I know what you've done for these boys (well not everything but enough to know that you ARE heroes)... a hero has courage, and strength.. and nothing you've done I know has come easy and yet you've done it, you keep going, and doing whats right for them ... your boys are going to grow up to be exceptional men and make this world a better place because of you two... two of the best parents I know.

Catherine - You're going to make me cry...

Thanks for the kind words...you do know the most of what we've been through.  But, still, we haven't done anything that any other parent wouldn't do for their kids.
